Killer piece. I think many different guards would work from pearl white to black to tort. SC pickups might be a way to go, also. I use blue label SS's on all my basses. I prefer ash bodies and maple boards

Hey Sadowsky clubbers. A buddy of mine is looking for a used NYC 4 string. He'd like something kinda lightweight(8lbs or so) and def wants a rosewood board. Other than that, he's flexible. If anyone has something or know of one, PM me

All right back in the club. Just picked this NYC up. My first NYC 5er. Had a really old NYC 4 at one time and a metro 5er, but this one really had me GASSy. It is a weight reduce alder, flamed maple board and hum canceling pickups. And it so needs a tort guard, anybody have a tort they want to trade for a white?
So any thoughts on the tonal characteristics of this one. I have had plenty of ash/maple combos, and alder rosewood combos, but this may be my first alder/maple combo. Also wondering if I should go with nickels or steels (I have a set of Black label Sado's or I have some Dunlop nickels). I usually run SS on alder/ rosewood combos for a little extra zing and usually nickels on maple boards for a little less zing.

Man, I can definitely see a tort guard on there, but I must admit, the white looks nice too. If it had a rosewood board, I'd be a lot more about tort, but with that maple board, I think there's more of a variety you can choose from that'll look great.All right back in the club. Personally, I'd go for blue steels on this bad boy. I think the alder body will lend a little bit sweeter and slightly less aggressive tone compared to ash, yet still have more edge than a rosewood board'd bass, and I think the blue steels would compliment that really well. I can not wait to check this one out in person.
Can I please get in! This is my second round with a Sadowsky... It didn't work out the first time but I believe this one's a keeper! She has her first rehearsal tomorrow and hittin the stage next Saturday, can't wait

I have a question about standard vs. vintage. On a search I pulled up a discussion about room between the strings on a std vs. vintage. There was a comment (Kjung?) that since Sadowsky's have a rather shallow neck pocket the standards have a little more space between the body and strings, and that can throw people off when slapping/popping. I have to admit that in retrospect that might have been one thing that didn't really work for me on the JJ std vs my PJ Metro (which has a pickguard).

Yes, it was discussed before. To solve this problem (which might not be a problem to someone else) I attached a standard Metro pg (light sanded on couple of spots for perfect fit) with double sided tape - no screws. Works great. In the unlikely event that I want to sell the bass it'll come off easily.
You can also go the half pg rout ordered from the shop.
Interesting solution. Here's another wacky question. Has anyone ever done a vintage with black hardware? Do they even make a control cover in black instead of chrome? I was thinking NYC PJ 5 std alder/morado in 59 burst with black hardware but find that my Metro has a perfect feel/spacing for slap. Not sure I've ever seen pickguard and all black hardware...
Its funny, I was just trying to figure out if I should call Kevin and ask him to put black hardware on my vintage 4 quilted maple/tort PG and Birdseye maple neck. Every standard with quilted maple caramel burst like this one makes me

If you go back a few pages there is a fellow club member that got his vintage style bass with a black control plate.
You can also buy and install all black hardware (including control plate) yourselves, but who wants to do something reasonable like that?

There is no difference in the neck pocket depth on a standarad vs a vintage, the last I knew. The NYC Ultra Vintage is the only one that has the depth difference. The other two are identical except for a pickguard and control plate, the last I knew

You inspired me so I also did some mods on my Will Lee.
So I glued a old tuner so I don't play out of tune anymore. Bolt on an extra handle for ease of carrying. Added a volume, bass and treble that are wired directly to my amp. Epoxied a fan for my fingers because I play so damn fast.
Oh my God, what have I started?!?!?!?! Hilarious!!! I love the handle for ease of carrying and especially the fan to cool off your fingers!!!! Too funny!
I think you're right about pocket depth - but that means that the *effective* height difference between body and strings is different for a standard vs vintage due to the pickguard. If your hand/brain is used to keying off a distance/feel, the switching between the two can take some adjusting. At least thats what I was reading from earlier posts, and was backed up by my short flirt with a standard JJ.

So, I wanna try a Metro PJ5.
I have Metro RV5 JJ I really like; it's 59 burst with a morado f/b.
I kinda feel torn between going with combination cause I already know I like it, and going with the ash maple combination "so it's more different than the same as my RV5JJ."
Thoughts?

I haven't tried a PJ in ash/maple so I can't speak to that. I do find that the PJ5 in alder/morado is spot on. I was playing last night and discovered the joy of the oft-maligned VTC. I find that while I tend to play it wide open, turning it down 1/4-1/2 turn changes the character of the bass quite at bit. It takes away any harsh clack (but some of the sizzle) of the active pups. It is like the passive sound pumped a bit.
I didn't like ash/maple in a JJ, but I think that is more that I just don't really like the JJ nearly as much as the PJ combination. My fretted basses for the last 15+ years have been Ernie Ball Sterling and Zon Sonus Custom (Bart humbuckers) and I haven't had a J-bass since '94. I've just gotten used to a different tone.
