I really like that tone (which is a tone I attempt to achieve with my ash/maple/singles Sadowsky). I like that burpy, warm 'diggin in at the bridge' tone, with that nice upper mid grind without all the click and sizzle. She really makes that instrument sing. If those aren't singles, that's the punchiest sounding HC loaded Sadowsky I've heard.

Does anyone know what pickups she uses? Again, sounds like the Sadowsky singles to me, but so much is defined by the hands of a monster player like her.

Well, the WL model has SC's in it, so I assume that's also what he uses on his other basses.

Also on the deeper cut, it's mainly to accommodate the extra frets, so it is actually deeper than any other body he has besides the 24 fret J, of course.

All that said, I've spent some time with Tom's WL4 at this point, and man, that thing is so aggressive I actually did find the mid control to be a bit much. I want to play around with it, but when I first played one of these at NAMM, I was like, man, when they have a 5, I'm on it. Take my name down right now. But now, I'm not so sure. I found myself bouncing into it, and then right back out, and instead just doing the usual favor the bridge pickup thing. So really, The main attractions a WL5 would have for me right now is a couple extra frets and decent access to them. I think everything else (neck profile, nut width) can all be custom ordered right now.

I didn't realize Will used singles (haven't really followed him much in the past 10 years or so). Yeah, not much need for mid boost with those (a narrow Q cut at 1K... that would be useful to kind of get a more hi fi HC tone sometimes).

I thought the standard WL model had the HC's (where the mid boost does make a bit of sense).

Who knows!

Well, there is only one WL model that I know of and the only choice you have is maple or "rosewood" for the board. They're all ash bodies, they're all 4 strings, and they're all SC pickups.

I agree tho, maybe with the softening of the rosewood boards, or if it had HC's in it, the mid control would do more at least for me personally.

I was thinking with something as aggressive as ash/maple, I might even see about tweaking the controls such that it was kinda' "normal" with the mid engaged, and actually use it as a scoop control by turning it off. Just some ideas.

That was my 'narrow Q cut at 1K' idea. That's kind of the sweet spot with the Sadowsky singles and ash/maple spec to kind of soften the SC's and in some ways mimic the more hi fi, sizzly, less grind tone of the HC's. That would be kinda cool.

Anyway, I guess the point of the spec is that Will digs it.

Yeah, I was just going by the body spec on the site, it only listed ash, where is it listed "maple or rosewood" for the board. But then down below it says "Premium woods, matching headstock, bell cover" under "options." Missed that part.

Bottom line tho, if I understand you correctly, it would be impossible to order a WL4 with HC's, correct?

If you guys want, I can do some recordings with my WL4 (actually the prototype that was with Will before - The one he has on the Sadowsky pictures) and post here. The bass sound awesome, and I really like soloing the neck pickup and engaging the mid bump.
