If you don't necessarily care about figuring in the guard, and you just want an alternative look that is a bit more striking, Maybe a parchment guard would look nice on a burst?

My understanding is that you can get replacement guards for NYC basses, but you have to send in your current guard so an exact match can be made: this because NYC basses are custom rather than production.

I'm guessing it's too late for you, but it's cheaper to get a duplicate guard made at the time you order your NYC. When I ordered my black/black P5 I got a spare tort guard, but have never gotten around to trying it on... simply because it's a pain in the a$$ to swap a pickguard on a P-bass. :p You J-bassers are lucky that way.

The Metro is such a nice-looking bass, I'd like to get a better looking tort guard for it. The brown tortoiseshell is kinda boring to me. It's very dark and is monochromatic, just various shades of yellowy gold to dark brown. It doesn't look nice until it's in the sunshine and the light picks up the lighter parts.

I'd like to pick up a red/brown tort guard, one with nice red to brown and cream highlights. Yours is kinda like what I'm looking for. Is it a Sadowsky pickguard, or did you get it somewhere else.

I'm looking for a really nice quality red/brown pickguard with W/B/W layers.

I guess Sadowsky thinks Red/brown tort only looks good with a 3TS finish, but I think it looks great on a '59 burst like I have too.

Or alternatively, who makes a dynamite custom tort guard?

Hawkeye, The pickguard was cut at the Sadowsky shop last week. After 11 yrs w/ the mint guard I'm kinda liking the dark guard with the dark edge of the burst. That picture on the green felt background might be a little decieving as is was diditally lightened a bit. (hard to tell if it is as dark as the one on your instrument...which BTW is STUNNING...the shine on that bass is amazing). ...and like you said the new guard really does jump off the bass in the sunlight.

I didn't do a lot of research on what else is available as I really enjoy doing business with the people in NYC and no matter what the transaction my expectations are ALWAYS exceeded.

I would call/email them re what type of material they have available. You might find just what you're looking for. I'm sure these guys will bend over backwards to help you get just what you want.

Yes John, that be the one. I was quite pleased when I opened the case. My photos really don't do it justice:hmm:. I tend to like basses that are a bit more subtle looking than some of the over-the-top tops, so this just worked out fine. Thank you guys for the compliments.

I did a little tweeking on the setup since I prefer a very low action. It was a piece of cake to dial things right in for my preferences. The neck was already flat and I was able to get crazy low action. I also learned something from this. When I first tried the bass it was kinda dark and vintage sounding. Almost kinda thick. A very nice tone but not what I was looking for in an ash/maple Sadowsky. But when I lowered the action the tone took on a whole new charcter. A lot more punchy and articulate. Not as thick and smokey sounding. It is definitely a different tone than my RV4 which is what I was hoping.:bassist:

I will take it to practice on Sunday and see how it fits in the mix with a couple of over-driven Marshall half-stacks. But I am on the hunt for a set of SC's to see how that works with the bass.

I have no idea why, but Sadowskys are incredibly sensitive to setup variations. My MV4 was a clunker IMO when I received it, mostly because it wasn't set up for my preferences at all, but after a half-hour of tweaking it's a whole different bass.

It was a lesson learned for me.

The other thing that threw me was for some reason the blend pot was opposite from the typical Sadowsky blend pot. So I was thinking that I was favoring the bridge pickup and all along it was the neck pickup. I only had about 10 minutes to fool around with it before heading off to work. So I was very confused at that point. I'll have to figure out what is going on there.

Congrats. Very Simple fix...Since you have Nordstrand's in there now, Just reverse the White Pickup leads.
