It's hard to place that clip. I asked Jarrett to post it up here, since my recommendation of the Cirrus/Smith/Sadowsky modern kind of burpy with modern top end thing came to mind with that clip. I'm not hearing much J Bass in there, but who knows. The Modern will be fatter, but similar 'space between the notes' and that soapbar humbucking sort of top end to my ear. I hear a lot of 'bridge pickup' in that clip (I believe it is a Warwick, so that makes sense), which is why I thought the basses with soapbars close to the bridge (again, Modern/Smith/Cirrus) would probably get him where he wants to go.

Not totally sure, so I'm glad he's getting more feedback from the Sadowsky gang.

I am with Kjung on this one. It sounds more like the M5-24 I once had than like my MV5.

Another bass that comes to mind is the Lakland 55-94 or 55-02...

Gotcha, thanks for providing that. I'm still confused on whether to go soapbar or JJ on a Sadowsky for me.

I agree his sample doesn't sound like your sample. But your sample doesn't sound like the Modern's I've played and owned.... it almost sounds scooped.... I don't hear the Modern punch and burp that is so prevalent in that instrument.

Of course, it doesn't sound bad at all, but I have a feeling we are hearing a very voiced rig versus the Modern. Sounds more like a big, fat Roscoe with Barts or something... dark, deep, wide... almost the opposite of the way I typically hear the Modern 24. Was that through the 502/UL rig? That would, IMO make sense if that is the case.

True, but IMHO, those diffs could easily be explained by EQ. There's a definite common "ping" there that reminds me a LOT of all the M5/24's 24-Fret 5's I've played and heard. I still feel very strongly it's one of those, or something very similar, and no way a J bass.

I should probably mention that mine is recorded direct and flat. No amps, cabs or outboard preamps involved, just dry bass. When clip opens, the preamp is bypassed. If you listen to the end of the clip, the tone changes a bit. I'm looking for a bass that can cover that sort of spectrum of tones. I'd just like one that had a little less woody growl and is tighter and punchier.

Sorry to intereupt this technical discussion, just thought I'd offer a quick first impression of my new Vintage five string. As background, I've been pretty much a Fender player for ever, with a short period in the mid 1990's on a Modulus Quantum Five. I'm also a cabinet maker by trade (40+ years at it), and have built 33 classical guitars and a half dozen Fender style bass guitars on the side. While I was able to play classical guitar I owned many fine instruments, including my main player, a Ramirez 1A. This Sadowsky is superior in every way to any factory or custom instrument I have had the pleasure of owning, and equal to the Ramirez. Attention to detail is really impressive. OK so the fit and finsish are top notch.
I didn't have much time to mess with it before showing up at the gig. Luckily right out of the box it was set up perfectly. In fact I have never once in my life had that happen! I didn't have to tweak anything. I struggled with the EQ a bit the first set, not used to so many choices! The VTC had me stumped, so I left it in the middle until I figured out the rest.
By the end of the second set I was pretty comfortable with the pan, treble and bass boost, and overall sound. On the break a local player who had come in for a drink (and to let his girlefriend sit in singing a couple tunes with us) came over and said,"wow that bass sounds incredible, very clear and defined." I was dumbfounded as this guy never says anything good about anything.
By the end of the night I was messing with the VTC and really found some great settings. I feel like a whole new world of sound has been made available to me. Quite a revalation. And not once did I feel disoriented with the fingerboard or the action, even while singing or sightreading, it feels like I've been playing this instrument for years already. Wow. Good work Roger. And thank you! Now I know what you guys have been raving about.

This is how I felt after my first gig with my Sadowsky bass!

Be careful ..... Sadowsky basses are like potato chips.....
You just cant own one!!!! :hiding:

P.S. Beutiful bass and nice to see another MA Sadowsky owner on here as well! :cool:

I always love reading these (essentially) "now I get it" posts. :D

Yes, I had mine, too. Initial thoughts on these pretty luke warm, but then the "holy crap" experience. Always good and fun. :)
