+1 Also, of course if you have a cab with no tweeter, that treble boost can really sound nice coming out of the top end of a driver.... grindy!

One thing I find with the Sadowsky pre is that a VERY little bit goes a long way. I don't think I've ever boosted the treble control at all, since the Sadowsky basses have so much going on up top already, and would never boost that bass control more than 20%... typically less than that.

One thing is for sure, if you crank that bass and treble control, you will get a scoop, and for most amps and players, it will be a boomy, muddy mess. However, just a very, very slight fattening of the low end really adds some nice meat to the tone with most rigs and players... that, combined with the nice buffering impact, sounds great in most mixes.

I did feel the need to get the more mid present single coils for my Sadowsky to really generate the grind and punch I like with my particular technique and approach.

Same here on the bass boost. I always start flat in any room, and might add in a little bass and treble throughout the night, depending on what tonal variety I'm going for.

If i was still using JJ-style Sadowsky's, the SC's would be a MUST for me. ALMOST kept the SC-equipped RV5 I had, if I wasn't such a diehard fan of that P pickup and body shape.

I'm now part of your club and a proud french owner
I've been to NY last year and I visited the Sado factory.
Since then, I KNEW I needed a Sadowsky bass.


I have found a MV4 used on the market and now it's mine !
All I miss is a black perloid pickguard but I'll order one very soon.

I've found this on Music Man basses. I've never had that problem on a Lakland before, though. I had always thought it was a Music Man 'feature.'

I'm supposed to be going down to NYC next week to visit with the wife's cousins and stuff. I'm going to try to get in to the Sadowsky shop at some point while we're there. Is it easily accessible by Metro (Subway?) or bus from anyplace in Manhattan?

It's right across the river from Manhattan, in Brooklyn.

Others native to the area can help with how to get there via public transport. You should definitely go. The folks there are a wonderful bunch and they have fantastic toys. ;)

I made my whole family wait down in the car while I visited there. :hiding: I felt a little guilty but it was the ONLY thing I really wanted to do while in NYC. It turned out to be important though as I changed the order I was about to place from a MV4 to a Will Lee after visiting and trying what they had in stock.

BTW, nice bass, alex6! I think it looks great as-is.

if not the same, you should be in the ballpark. not two instruments sound the same, even with the same woods and electronics but that's something that you would probably hear if you were comparing them side by side.

that's a great looking combo; black on black with a maple board looks great to me. I wouldn't go for a black pearloid pickguard.

This topic reminds me of some of the discussions I have had with people about getting "under" (and sometimes "over") the mix, versus "punching through." Each technique can work, IME, depending upon the situation (for me, it tends to center upon which chunk of sonic real estate the guitars are trying to occupy).

Couldn't agree more. It is always easier to cut through with a three piece vs a six or seven piece where there is a lot more going on sonically.

FWIW here's some video (w/ decent audio quality) of a gig I did earlier this month, right after buying the RV5. Audio is a mix of ambient room and the board feed, both via a Zoom H4N. My part of the board feed came from the Shuttle 9.0's DI. The ambient feed also includes a single Bergantino HT112ER. Everything flat on the amp. On the bass, blend is centered, VTC is @ ~ 7/10, treble boost @ ~ 1/10 and bass boost @ ~ 3/10.

- some slap nonsense if you're interested.

This bass is something. First heard it on a Thursday night - bought it 45 minutes later. It was put to use on gigs the next three days. It'll soon be wearing SC's and a 500k volume pot, so it's nice to have some "befores" as a baseline.
