That's surprising. My bass was made in 1986, and when I bought it last month Roger looked at his build log and told me all about it.

Try tapping on various areas of the top. If it sounds hollow it probably is. I used to play Alembic Series basses, which are usually semihollow, and which was apparent when you knocked gently on the top.

Well, once you get the MV, the RV will be the only HC bass you have, right? If so, I'd suggest keeping the RV just so you have the option of having an HC bass if you really needed one, unless you really just simply dislike its tone. Flip the Valenti when the MV comes in. The MV is gonna' eat its cheese anyway. :)

Between those two it's tough alright.
The Valenti is more aggressive, the AC is a little truer to Old School.
The Valenti has a tad narrower board, and the strings are closer to the edge.
The AC is wider, with more runoff room.

Very nice collection you have there. I hope you love the MV with SCs. Thats what I have on the way and am very happy to hear that combo pleasing PPL.

Given my propensity to dig a bass with heft and edge, I think the MV is gonna suit me well!

Sorry Vic but Chef is a hard cat to convince and if he likes it then it just makes me feel better. I was driving up I-57 the other day and seen a bill board up by Bloomington that said VIC LOVES ASH/MAPLE W/SCs. I just about promise I seen that Billboard. And Um, I am kind of in the middle of Columbia, MO. and Central, IL. If you and Chef dont care please DO NOT play those ash/Maple SC basses @ the same time. I can only handle HUMMMM on one side of my head @ a time.

Seriously I have gigged my Ash/Morado UV70-5 with SCs at atleast 10 different places since I have had it and have not had any Hum problems at all. I love SC's.

Chef -- I just put Nordstrand NJ5s in my RV5 and it made a big difference, even over the Area-Js which are already more honest sounding than the 5 string HCs. I'm not sure it makes sense to have quite as many J-5s as you've got there ... but if you want to try to make things work with the RV5, I would suggest NJ5s.

That makes perfect sense... especially if you're talking about the NJ5's Carey had before the newer longer models that go in his Classic series (which are a lot more period faithful, but clearly won't fit the bass in question).

I've always felt Carey's pickups have more grunt to them than a lot of other pickups. I REALLY like the fact that Roger moved to Carey's pickups in the PJ5's. Mine are just smokin'! I actually had an NYC PJ5 that was older, than I updated to the current Nordstrand-based Sadowsky set, and you can really tell (even though those are HC pickups of course... this is more of a general point.)

Anyway, my main point is, if you want 60's period faithful, that's one thing, but if you want something with a bit more going on, Roger's SC's would definitely do it, and I think Carey's would even do it a bit more. Just depends how much you want.

Just one side note, especially in a Sadowsky, I'd really recommend sticking with Roger's stuff. He's spent a lot of time "matching" things to get what he wants to hear, which of course all of us here are ga-ga over, so despite how much I love Carey's stuff, I wouldn't personally mess with that formula. Bottom line recommendation: get whatever Roger has available, and be happy. :)

At this point, I know I don't dig the HC's; and, I'm waiting for MV5 #4168 to get fitted with single coils and get here.
I believe those will be Roger's new Nord sourced SC's.
So, once that gets here, I'll have an idea what the new SC's do, and that will help determine the RV5's future with me...

yeah, but carey's supplying him singles now. dont know if its for 4's and 5's though. i did see an order of 4's that carey was preparing for roger.
