Club Sadowsky!!!

My NYC 5 had HC, too scooped for me. Replaced with Sad SC, a bit better, still too hifi and scooped. Replaced with NJ5, much fatter and warmer, more grunt, treble peak is lower, less extreme lows, more low mids, more mids overall. Much closer to what I am looking for.

But as some of my past posts show, I am probably looking for something much less scooped and hifi sounding that many (most) other Sadowsky owners...

I have a fairly new NYC vintage 5-24 ash/maple with SC's liked it so much i have an MV5 on the way tried to order Sadowky SC's for it but their out of stock. Is your NYC an ash/maple? The NJ5's sound very interesting do they just drop right in, casings are the same size?
It sounds like the nordy's must work well with the sadowsky pre?
For my taste only a very little preamp works best anyway!

NJ5s (NOT NJ5Fs) are a direct fit, have the right string spacing and radius, work great with or without the preamp on, and sound fantastic.

I believe Nordstrand are supplying the Sadowsky 5 string SC5 pickups now. I purchased an MV5 ~ 7 weeks ago, and have been waiting for the new order of SC5's to show up since then.
I've heard that the new SC5's are being wound to Roger's spec and are not the same as the Nord offering; but, we'll have to let the man address that directly.

My NYC fiver is in need of SCs for my tone goals and the whole Sadowsky SCs (wound to specs by Nordstrand) vs the stock NJ5s is interesting. The Sadowsky SCs have been out of stock for a long while and heard they are still about two weeks out. With the differences between the two that TBer pickles and smeet describe, I am tempted to try a set of NJ5s.

Coincedently I have a nordy PJ5 with a sadowsky preamp and the nordstrand pickups and the sadwosky pre and nordstrand pickups play well together in that bass. I would normally go with what Vic suggests of pairing sadowsky pickups and pre together, but I am intrigued. What to do.

I think he may have touched on it a while back. IIRC he said they are wound to the exact specs of the older ones.

This is very interesting. I hadn't heard that Roger was going with Nordstrand customs for his JJ offerings or his SC J offerings as well as the existing PJ5 set he's currently using.

Roger posted a while back. Not all JJ offerings... the HC's are still the same, but he posted that all the J singles are now sourced from Nordstrand. However, they are wound to mimic the amazing Seymour's he was using (it wasn't clear if this was a permanent thing are not). Not sure two pickups from different manufacturers can be made to sound identical, but I'm sure they sound good.

Except for the J in the PJ5 set, at least... that's definitely a flavor of the Nordstrand NJ5S.

Thanks. I obviously totally missed that. Yeah, I seriously doubt they'll sound literally identical, but, I'm totally confident they'll sound close enough they'll rock just as well in all the right ways. :)

I can't remember the exact post.. it was quite a while ago... not sure how the new ones sound. I believe they are an out of stock item now, so not sure if things are 'still in play' on the single J spec and source.. I'm just glad I have my Seymours!:bassist:

I'm actually inquiring to find out if the SC's in my latest MV5-24 are Nordstrand or SD based. If it's been that long ago, I'm thinking I actually now have a set of each. SD's in my older NYC and Nords in my newer Metro. If that's the case, then I can absolutely verify there are NO tonal issues or deficiencies with the newer SC pickups as compared to the older ones (as you'd expect anyway, with Roger's stringent standards).

Kevin told me early last week the new round of SC's should have shipped to the Sadowsky shop later in the week.
Hopefully, that means they're there, or close, now, and my MV5 can be finished up.

Interesting. This almost guarantees my MV5-24 has Nordstrands in it. This post was from 5/10 and he said he currently had Nordstrands in stock. I got the email about my MV5-24 arriving on 5/21, and by 5/29 I'd had it in my hands.

this would be a pain in the ass, but you could know for sure by pulling the pickup and looking at the bottom of it. the nords have a different way of the leads being connected to the eyelet than the duncans with the duncans just looking like trad fender pickups.

Don't put it past Vic to verify this Joe.:)

heres for paranoid pain in the ass story of the week. my boss at work has known richard green since the 70's. this is the dude who had a strat with the serial 0001. in 74 he took it to jensens music where seymour duncan was the repairman so he could get it refinished. seymour sent it to wayne charvel who switched bodies instead of refinishing. that body ended up on another 0001 strat in the hands of david gilmour.

after hearing that story i took apart my 62 jazz to make sure it was all still the same parts. i never took it apart after getting it refinished in 1999. totally unnecessary since i could tell everything felt the same, but im dumb like that;)

Ask and ye shall receive... so, what say you?

I can't remember for sure, but I was thinking Carey's came from opposite corners, so these might actually be SDs.

BTW, that copper tape goes up both sides of the pickup inside the cover, and of course that third wire is a ground. Probably part of Roger's extra measures to help reduce SC hum. Nicely done!

yeah id say those were duncans. carey does this thing where the leads go in to the flatwork in the middle of one side and then come out the side and attach to the eyelet. most pickups look like that where the lead attaches directly to the eyelet on the bottom side of the flatwork. heres a pic from chunger where you can see what im talking about. my nj4's i have are constructed the same way.

Cool... plus the covers are rounded on the Nords too as I recall, not the sharp square edges... I forgot that about the NJ5S based J in my Metro PJ5.

I guess one part of me rejoices a little... NOT because I have ANY concerns about the NJ5's, but mainly because the SD's are a total known quantity for me with my older NYC, so it's just nice to have that little bit of added consistency.
