What combination should I be looking at Ash/Maple or ALD/Rosewd.

I've heard that ash/maple is easier to go towards ald/rswd but harder for ald/rswd to go towards ash/maple ??

So would this mean ash/maple is a more versatile combo ??

That's been debated for 40 years Ash maple will give you wider low end and more upper mid growl (like my clips on Youtube.. quite aggressive). Alder/RW is a bit more airy up top and 'round' (not as big... warmer, more low mid growly) down low.

The Metro's use a fretboard called Morado, which is kind of half way between maple and rosewood... a little more snap and aggression than a true rosewood, which in general is a bit more organic and warm. So, if you are looking at a Metro, hard to go wrong with an RV with some nickel roundwounds for the tone you are looking for.

I tried flats for many years and always ended up going back to rounds after a couple of weeks, but I can't imagine myself without a bass with flats, in fact, I rarely play rounds anymore.

I love flats on my 74 P bass , couldn't imagine playing that bass without them , all my others have rounds , It is a nice get away ,

I do like bright strings, not glassy, but on occasion I like to get a nice grindy sound. So far on this bass I've tried Steel LoRiders, HiBeams, Chromes, DDTs and maybe some others. Each of these have brought out characteristics I liked and lacked something else. I have a set of Circle K's that I'll throw on next. What I would really like is something that sounds like the HiBeams but with a thicker fundamental. With all this finagling I still wonder if I am fighting the innate sound of this instrument. It does sound great, just not quite what I hear in my head.

If your looking for more fundamental and mid punch you are definitely going in the wrong direction with steel LoRiders and HiBeams as I find these to have a built in mid-scoop. You may like the nickel LoRiders as they are a bit more balanced, but again I found the TI Enfeld Superalloys to give me the low-mid punch I was missing with other strings. Good luck on your quest.

You might consider trying the Fat Beams. Very nice strings.

Thanks guys, the Nickel LoRiders and FatBeams are already on my list to try, I will probably try out the Superalloys as well. Man, with all the $tring$ I've been trying out I could have bought another bass by now...

I'm not sure I yet if I can afford to keep them both, but this one is hot, and I really want to try the single coils. My thoughts are if I really dig the SCs, I can always part with the PJ. I REALLY, REALLY hope I don't have to though. I fall more in love with that bass every time I play it.

BTW, which PG? It comes with both as well as a clear!!
