You can. But, you may have a lot of noise issues to deal with.

In my opinion, it wouldn't be worth the effort. The HC still gets that burp when soloed. When blended, the primary tone is coming off the split. The bridge PU is nice for texture and mid presence, but I don't think you would end up with tonal differences substantial enough to warrant the effort.

IMO, of course.

The split coil P bass pickup is inherently hum canceling.
A single coil J pickup is going to hum when used in a P/J. Whether the amount is acceptable is up to you.

I have a 75 P bass with a J pickup added. It's a Duncan Antiquity II J pickup. It sounds great, but it DOES hum some. It doesn't bother me at all on a live gig.

I wouldn't swap a hum canceling J out of a Sadowsky P/J, personally. My Sadowsky P/J has become one of my absolute favourite basses to play... as is :D

cripula is correct, the P pickup has two coils because it's a two piece pickup... no way to do that with a single coil, and as such, of course it's a hum canceling (HC) design.

However, what nobody has come right out and said is why you get hum if you put a SC J pickup in a PJ.

The reason is, in a normal J with two SC pickups, when you use both pickups, they hum cancel with each other.

If you take one of those SC pickups out and replace it with a HC pickup (the P), then the bridge pickup no longer has a pickup to hum cancel with, so it hums all the time.

This means the only time you don't get any hum is when you solo the P pickup. As long as the J pickup is solo'd or blended with the P, you'll also get its hum as well.

That said, while all SC pickups hum, some are lots better than others, so it just depends on your hum tolerance and how badly a given pickup hums.

I have noticed that none of the recently completed builds are shown on the "recently sold" pages of the Sadowsky site. Just curious about why not. It would be nice to go have a look see of what players are ordering as well as the "stock" builds. There must be lots of basses we're not getting to see.

That would make for lots of drool but I think Kevin has his hands full as it is.

As far as I know, it is the only option offered with the Metro. Not that they need another, that setup is the shizzle.

Correct, except to be technically correct about the HC J pickup, it's a split coil, not a dual coil.

I don't think either is more versatile than the other, and my JJ5 with HC pickups actually has pretty much the same pickups in it that the PJ5 does (I bought some Nordstrand NJ5S pickups for it to kinda' match the PJ5), so the bridge tone is pretty much identical. The blended tone and neck tone are of course very different. They both have ash bodies and maple necks, so that part's comparable, but the NYC has a chambered body, so that's gonna' affect things. The JJ5 is familiar ground. It's pretty much a J-type bass. PJ basses are kinda' in their own tone zone. They have a bit more of a modern sound to them. A little pingy on top compared to a JJ5.

Bottom line is, they're both amazing basses.

Agreed. I have the Nordstrand pickups in my NYC PJ5. The bridge pickup does hum but it's very, very minor. I can't imagine it being a real issue for most traditional gig environments.

When I picked my PJ5 up they did mention they were working with Nordstrand on a humcancelling version to address the "issue" -- but I'm not sure that it really even qualifies as one.

Correct, and the updated version is done and shipping. It's just gonna' take maybe a little bit of time for various dealer stocks to rollover (if it hasn't already). The "issue" IS minor, and depends on where you play, so I'm guessing most folks won't even notice it much, making it more of an enhancement moving forward than something anyone really has to deal with. I was on the front end of this one personally, so that's how I know. :)
