I've got some very similar mojo down towards the nut on the lower side of my older NYC (4098, plain natural J5). I don't really feel it when I play, but I do think it's kinda' cool that it's there. :)

+1 to Vic's comment. My Sadowsky neck was very 'flat/satin' when I got it, and a bit sticky. It is now getting a nice smooth semi-gloss finish, although not that classic 'shiny gloss lacquer' sort of thing like back in the day. I assume the gloss poly was meant to emulate that classic 'new/just applied' high gloss lacquer finish from the 60's, whereas the satin poly (by far my favorite neck finish) was meant to emulate a more 'very old, worn through' sort of lacquer vibe.

So the nitro without gloss feels like a very old, played-in nitro neck?

To me, no... a very good satin poly finish feels like a 20 year old nitro neck to me... almost like an oil finish.

The nitro without gloss feels (IME) not particularly good right out of the box/bag... it can get a bit sticky, etc. However, after a few months or a year of playing (depending on how much you play, the particular batch of nitro.. it can vary quite a bit across Sadowsky's, and your particular sweat composition/acidity/whatever!) it eventually will gloss up pretty close to a 'gloss' nitro finish.. not quite as shiny.

Interestingly, I find this happening even in parts of the neck that I rarely play on, so a pure passage of time must have something to do with it.

Hard to beat a really well applied thin satin poly neck finish IMO and IME, but I dig the Sadowsky nitro after it breaks in.

IMO, nothing beats that old, classic shiny poly though, which again is somewhat similar to the newer high gloss poly finishes... the main difference is, the high gloss poly stays that way forever, where the high gloss lacquer will eventually wear through, darken, and 'dull up'.

Whew! I don't think I could type that again... now my head is spinning.

Yeah, but I don't see much point to it, really. A satin/flat finish is just not gonna' last long on a nitro finish, so it'll start looking "patchy" before long. I think Roger's got it right... put the durable finish on the body, and put the finish on the neck that will wear in and feel better faster.

+1 Nice combination of keeping a bass looking good for a long time, and also feeling like 'yours' and broken in after a while.

Yeah, in retrospect, I almost wish I'd asked for a nitro finish on the neck of my 60's J5 from another vendor. Still, per your earlier point about a POLY satin finish on the neck (which is what that bass has), I do like it as a very close second, so I'm not at all unhappy with it.
