Club Sandberg (part 2)

Quick report from the field: used my TM4 at a synagogue service last night and it was the first time the sound guy commented. He said the new bass sounded so full and round and it cut through like none of my other basses. Now, it could have been him being nice and noticing a new axe, but I suspect he would have said "nice bass" and moved on. He's a man of few words. Also, we play a mix of jazz, traditional and rock and it was so versatile and perfect for all styles. I was able to dial in a very "Jaco" sound from the split bridge pickup, very full P tone for the rock stuff and a full, but not boomy tone for everything else using the neck and bridge in humbucker mode. Kept the tone mostly at noon but dialed it up a little at times to taste. And, well, cause I could.

Anyway, for anyone looking for versatility, playability and good looks, I can't imagine a better choice. Now I'm starting to gas for a VS to keep my TM company. Damn.

Hello guys!

I recently traded my AVRI Jazz for a Sandberg California Supreme VM4, as I stated earlier.

My question is about strings and EQ settings.

What are you using?

I currently have Labella Deep Talking Bass Flats, 105-45. In active mode, I like them very much with the active P pup alone, I like them with both pups on and I don't like them with the just the MM on. Sounds more like a Jazz than a Musicman. In passive mode the sound is similar, just a little thinner.

I like the bass knob a lot, the treble I can add just a little, for a little growl.


How about you?

I'm a nickel round wound guy except for a semi-hollow Warwick I have that has flats on it. My TM-4 is so bright I rarely goose the highs but do push the lows to about 6:00. I'm tempted to try something other than my standard nickel D'Addarios and try Elixers or something with a little less brightness. I use 50-105 primarily. Looking forward to hearing other responses.

I look forward to hearing what you think of it! I don’t think mine will come with the DG preamp though. I believe this will be a Glockenklang like the other stock preamps only with a 3-band rather than 2-band EQ. Though, I’d have no problem if they did ship mine with a Tone Capsule.

I think Tone Capsule will be the right for me. It has 500Hz and 2.8kHz mids that I need. I already tried their Darkglass Vintage Ultra V2 preamp with those frequencies and it is just right for TM4 humbucker. Think that would be nice if I got it on board instead in the pedal.

I believe if you get the Glock Preamp, you either cannot split the MM pickup into a single-coil or use the treble as a tone-knob in passive. I forget which one, but something gives... unless they have updated it in the last 3 months.

Mine is a 2009 VM4 with Glockenklang pre-amp.

The MM pup can't be splited. The treble in passive mode acts as tone knob, the bass doesn't do anything.

yes! A three-band EQ that splits the MM pickup and does the passive tone knob trick with the treble knob would be the end-all glock. Also, two mids and no treble again would help. These Sandberg's don't need much extra in the treble wheelhouse.

Agreed! I sent a note to my US rep who placed the order for me to get more info. Will update you with what I hear back.

So then the DG pre *does* have it all though doesn't it? Since the Grand Dark model does have the switch for the MM pickup to be split and the 3-band EQ. Any benefit to the Glock pre over the DG?
