Hey, Sandberg guys!
A quick question. I am in the market for a 5 string active Jazz style bass, and I recently played a Sandberg California TT active bass in classic sunburst. It felt great, and sounded even better. What I'm having, though, is a hard time finding pricing guidelines for these things. You guys that are in the know: What would be a good price for a used bass like the one I described? At what price would you hold off? And at what price would you buy immediately?

Just went down to Session Musik in Frankfurt and played a sweet Sandberg! I own a Fender AmDlx P/J and got a chance to a/b the two for well over an hour. I'm so stuck on which one I want to keep.
The Sandberg, lake placid blue/rosewood board P/MM, it played so much nicer than the Fender, lower action that felt smooth and effortless, the neck was jazz profile, which I prefer, it balanced pretty well and I'd guess it weight about 9lbs. The tone was super clean, warm, and tighter sounding than the Fender. The P soloed wasn't a lot different than the Fender, but that MM pickup adds a lot more of that thinner, tighter modern tone. That was the deal killer for me.
Comparatively, the Fender with both pickups blended sound bigger and fuller, more organic in the low end and just a bit modern in the high end. The bridge pickup soloed was a bit grittier/organic than the MM. The Fender sounded a little furrier over all. I dig that. The Sandberg was too clean for me and the music I'm playing right now, but it still really killed for that modern but not too modern thing.
I can't do without that organic fat Fender sound, but would love to own a more modern sounding Sandberg 5er down the road. By the way, Sandberg's build quality was noticeably better than the Fender, and simply felt more solid in my hands despite the lighter weight.

Hi, to get back at you. There are not terribly many used Sandbergs going for sale around. So the prices stay up relatively good.
A used 5 string TT, you'll probably be looking to spend around 900/1150. Depending on many factors like condition age and extras. A new Natural TT5 can start at 1250, but can cost well beyond the 1500 mark with different pickups, custom electronics, some special color or aging.
I'd recommend you keep checking the german ebay.de, bassmarkt.de and Invalid Link Removed for current prices. Best chances to find a used California there.
Check out Chicago music exchange if you want to try some other Sandbergs, from their catalog and what I heard they always have a couple around. Prices a bit high though, compared to europe. If you want to get one, best plan a trip to Germany.
Enjoy a couple of weeks here and return with a beautiful new Sandberg.

Hi everyone! I'm new in this forum, and also really soon I will be a newer happy owner of an awesome Sandberg bass guitar! As soon as I receive it I will post some pic, I place the order last December, it is supposed to arrive at the end of March... just a little bit of patience...

Can't really help you out on the decision as you described well both basses have a different feel and tone to them, it's difficult to decide what one needs exactly, specially after having played one of the basses for one hour and the other for a much longer time.
As you are located in Germany right now, I would suggest that you scratch some cash together and look for a used California VM. That way you can get to test it for a longer period of time and see if it suits your music. If you feel you don't want it anymore you can always resell it again. Best deals I have seen have been threw eBay so keep an eye out.

Hi, a California TM 5 blueburst with some custom features: swamp ash body, maple neck and fingerboard, black round dots, matched headstock, black HW and a transparent pickguard! yeah, time is running fast now, but I'll be happier when I could finally rock around with this beast!
