Club Sandberg (part 2)

Hi!

I have a Sandberg JJ5 bass and find the output really quiet, even in active mode. There is basically no difference in output between the active and passive mode. Which is normal with a Glockenklang preamp (I was told). I also used to think that active basses were louder than passive basses. I was suprised that I had to turn my gain really high on my Markbass and the signal still didn't reach the cliping volume. My Fender passive J bass was a bit louder than my Sandberg is.

Do any of you guys owning Sandbergs have the same experience? I mean, that the basses have low output...Or maybe I just have a faulty preamp :(

Anyway...Here's a pic of my bass and amp...Really happy with them both...

There isn't any volume difference between active and passive any any of my Sandbergs (unless of course you boost bass and treble).
However the Delano pickups are a fair bit more powerful than my Fender pickups.

Do you have the pickup height adjusted too far from the strings?

Hi there,
Yes check the pickup hight on your bass. If thats fine then I'm guessing it must be a faulty preamp. Glockenklang preamps should be loud, specially when combined with the Delanos.

Even if the output was a bit lower on yours it seems very strange that you have to put up the gain so high on your Markbass. Must be something faulty. Contact the store you got the bass from, if they don't want to help out let me know and I'll help you get in touch with Sandberg.

Very beautiful woodgrain on your California TT5!

Hi!

Well, there aren't many Sandbergs in my country so I haven't had the chance to compare the outputs and see if there is a noticable difference in volume. I measured the pickup height and it's fine. I even posted pics of the height along with my problems to Sandbreg who were very helpful. They also said that everything else looks fine.

I just want to make sure that a low output on my bass isn't something normal before I buy a new preamp...It becomes really annoying when the signal passes through different effects, like EBS bass IQ, which in my opinion doesn't respond as well as it should...I think it has a lot to do with a low output of my bass...I agree that I shouldn't have to set the gain on my amp almost to the max before it starts to clip. Makes no sense to me. If the gain is set lower...i notice a significant difference in the tone quality...and volume ofcourse.

I figured that this thread is the right place to ask you guys, owners of Sandberg basses, what the issues could be and how do your basses respond.

Thanks and yeah...the bass looks and plays awesome. By far the best I have ever owned.

When you get the same output level in active and in passive mode (which is indeed to be expected with the Glockenklang preamp), then I can't imagine a faulty preamp because it wouldn't affect passive mode.

My Sandberg basses (one active with Delanos, one passive with alnicos) have approximately the same output, and they don't differ much from my other basses. Also, adjusting pickup height doesn't make a huge difference. It's for small adjustments only, IME.

So if there's something at fault, it could be the pickups themselves or the wiring. But if the signal is the same as with other basses (even passive ones), then there's probably no fault at all.

:hyper: That's a beautiful Sandberg! Wow, this one really has my attention! I wish you all the best with it!!

I always had to set my basses to between 3 and 4 o'clock on my Markbass LM11 to make the blue light come on. Sometimes I couldn't make it come on at all. Strings can make a difference to output too.
I don't think the Sandberg/Delano output is so low. Maybe your Fender Jazz was a high output bass?

Yes you are right.

I was also thinking that the volume poti is at fault. If you caught a bad one it would affect the output in passive and active mode.
You could start by just changing the volume poti.

Benjoslo85 it really seems to me that your low output is not normal, if you have to turn the gain up so high.
My Sandbergs output is really good, even plugged directly into the soundcard of a computer I have enough signal to work with. Also all other Sandbergs I have tried, I never noticed that the output was low on any of them.

Yep...I have the same problem when I plug the bass into a M-audio fast track...There's not much to work with...Well...I'm getting tired of busting my head around this issue...I'm more and more conviced something is a bit funky with the preamp...I'll try to replace the whole thing with the pots and everything...:hmm: I'll report back and tell you what happened...Thanks again.

I have an amazing TM4 matt blackburst with rosewood fingerboard. The looks! The sound!

Share some pics! We'd like to see your TM4. :)

I really like matt blackburst.

Also the German store Musik Produktiv has a Terrabass Ice for sale, see threw version of the Terrabass with LEDs. These are pretty cool, I had one in my hands one time but didn't get a chance to play it. I was told that they sound pretty good.

Also for all US Sandberg Fans I found the store: StompRomp
They have some cool and decently priced Sandbergs. For example a Sandberg TM4 for $1800. Check it out. I'm not sure if they have a physical store, from what I see they sell all their stuff via their website or ebay.

Regards and enjoy!

Can anyone advice if it is recomemded to use a rcharchaegeable 9V battery for the active pickup boostwr.
I have been changing the battery at least once a minth and these batteries ain"t cheap here...

Which brand to use for recharge?
Which brand to use for alkaline?

THank You

HI

AFAIK the only way to drain the battery that fast is to leave the cable plugged in all the time. Unplugging the cable when the bass isn't in use disables the preamp and prevents battery drain.

Even with heavy use the battery in a non-defective bass should last for several months at least.

Fellow Sandbergers, I'd like some advice please. The push-pull volume pot on my treasured TM5 is much looser than the other three pots: it turns with much less resistance than the others, which is a nuisance as it's very easy to accidentally touch it when playing. All of a sudden the volume drops to nothing while slapping with my sloppy technique...

My bass tech guy says this can be a problem with push-pull pots but I'm pretty sure it wasn't like this when brand new. Does anyone else have the same 'loose pot' issue or is this possibly something to check out while it's still under warranty? I've made sure the knob is securely tightened to the post, and noticed a very slight wobble on the post itself when the knob was removed. Am I the only one with this problem?

I play in 3-4 bands, and I have never changed the batteries of any of my three Sandbergs.. Oldest bass/battery is almost 2 years old.

I believe that most rechargeable "9v" batteries don't give you enough voltage. If I recall it's only in the region of 7.2v fully charged !

The Sandberg basses should last at least a year with an alkaline battery.

Bump.

Should I be assuming by now that nobody else finds their volume pot less resistant than the others?
