So I succombed and ordered the bass in post #705 (a Basic PM4) and it should arrive Monday. Some of the guys in the UK have said that they found that the Sandbergs they used with the same p/up config, although beautifully built and sounding great solo at home, didn't cut it/through in a band situation. Any of you guys experienced this at all? I've got a 7 day return guarantee and have a rehearsal next week so if it doesn't make the grade I can send it back, but I soooo want it to be just right. Help allay my fears.

Perhaps it did not cut through in "their" particular band situation and most probably "they" don't know how to eq their rig properly. Perhaps their rigs are too small against a couple of Marshall full stacks, who knows what their situation is. Just because it did not work for them, or they were unable to make it work for them does not mean it's no good for everyone else. I would not be worrying at all.
Yeah, I think the Bullet 5 string is the next step for me. I'm thinking about asking Sandberg to move the neck pu nearer the neck, I like a larger gap between the pu's, that's where I use the pic. Perhaps the bridge pu can be nearer the bridge too.
What effect will that have on the tone or do you think I should not be changing something that has been carefully positioned ? Perhaps the soap bars sit low enough that it;s not an issue ?

It could possibly effect the mid-range slightly while possibly boosting low end a bit. Effect could be minor.
NEW BASS DAY! 
So first impressions are very good. A couple of tweaks here and there to get it to my spec, but nothing at all wrong with it out of the box. I tested it side by side with my double P p/up Road Worn and my Ray34. The 'Berg's P p/up is spot on, add a little bass and treble boost and it's massive, nice. The blended sound is good adding that edge that should help it cut through when needed. The MM p/up soloed doesn't sound like a Ray, more like a steroid driven bridge J, hardly surprising given its positioning. This is not a problem as I already have the Ray for that anyway. The balance on the knee and on the strap is spot on, but the bass is still a very manageable weight, clocking in at 7.5lbs according to the bathroom scales. This only about .75lbs heavier thatn the RW but without any of the head dive and is significantly lighter than the Ray which is a least another 2lbs heavier. Not keen on the stainless steel strings it came fitted with, but they're better than others I've tried, I'll change these to nickles once I decide it's a keeper. Rehearsal Thursday and gig Sunday should determine whether it stays in the stable. Watch this space, but I reckon you can count me in.

Sorry if this has already been covered, but I see a lot of the Sandbergs have Delano pups in them.
How do the Delanos compare to other brands like Bartolini, Seymour Duncan, and Nordstrand?

OK I had rehearsal with my band and used my new Basic PM4 tonight and it's soooo a keeper! Count me in. Here it is
Mate I'm soo glad you are happy with your Basic PM, those basses are great, all Sandbergs are great in a special way. Today I visited a very good classical guitar builder (but he can also do anything) because a Warwick needs some little fixing, I came with my Sandberg gigbag and even he said that Sandberg make some really really nice stuff!

Just got the screwdriver out and took off the p/g, I think it makes it look a bit classier, opinions?

I played mine without a scratch plate on for a while but I found that my thumb position wore away some of the finish... So I went for the see-thru plate... after masking the missing stain with some colour matched felt tip pen!...
I used the PM at a gig for the first time last night. I got nothing but praise about its sound from people whose opinion I respect and nothing but abuse about its looks from the band (gentle ribbing), they reckon it looks like a Moben or Ikea bass! They are a bunch of gentlemen who do not know who their fathers are

I sent them the one it came with as a template... & the see-thru one arrived very quickly... for less than £20, if I remember correctly...
However... The last turn of the last screw, to fix it on, cracked the plate!.. bah!
I'm living with it, as it doesn't really notice unless you are close up..
I had also written to Sandberg, who eventually replied saying that they would make me one too... but I'd already gone ahead with Aurora Project by then....
