Anyone have microphonic pickups? Last night I discovered mine is in a big way. Of all the basses I have played in 15 years I have never heard anything like it! Tap the bass pretty much anywhere and it sounds like a big hollow box.

Ya I have a slotted 1000 that's apparently in the process of going micro. There seems to be some shrill overtones as a result, not horrible, but detectable.

I've been told the pup needs repotting, which is believable as the bass is old and was played hard. Maybe I'll do the potting some day.

I havent noticed any unwanted sounds with normal play but at higher volumes it was threatening to feedback a little.

So is repotting the only fix or can pickups be rewound? Does anyone know if the potting process affects tone?

It doesn't need rewound, cause it still works.
It needs "re-insulated" to keep it from picking up unwanted noises.

At least that's my ignoramus level understanding of the situation

Holy Moley- that is one of the nicest looking basses I've ever seen. Email me when you decide to sell it! (this weekend works...)

I think this thread may have officially convinced me to keep my L1000- I'm not sure what I was thinking!

Thanks...not only great looking, but sounds great, too. I bought it quite grubby and the setup was impossibly poor. I got it as a gigging bass so I could keep my '74 Jazz at home.

Once it was cleaned up and setup, it became the regular gig bass not by default, but for its sound and playability. It has recorded great, too.

Now, the L-1000 stays home and a Tribute L-2500 goes to the gigs (But the wunkay isn't for sale.)
