This is an attempt at crossposting, since this is about a "wunkay".
Well, I'm not sure about ash, in fact sitting there looking at the raw wood, I thought it the grain looked more like alder or poplar, but the color is wrong for poplar. Studying this a bit further, I think that the obscured upside-down date code starts with "OC" leading me to believe that it was a body that was rejected in October (hence the circled 2 over the date) that was deemed satisfactory for an opaque bass in November. But did they make Alder Basses in late 1981? Also the 9 1/2 lb. weight makes me think that it might be a heavier wood, but it's all guesswork since I don't really know what the weight ranges for various woods would have been.
I've seen no other images of date codes on G&Ls, but if most were stamped this makes me wonder about the penciled in date annotated "CL".
Either way, I've reassembled, adjusted and intonated it and I must admit that it is a very sweet bass. I don't know if cross-posting is allowed here, but I might just try it because of the following question:
The nut width is 1 5/8" on this Bass. The "3" on the neck heel made me think that this might have been a #3 neck, but the G&L site lists no such thing, and all currently possible necks show 1 1/2" or 1 3/4" widths at the nut. Hunh?

Wow... very cool! I'm sure you're right about ash, but I wouldn't be able to guess it from that picture.
Maybe I'll have to pull the neck out of mine to recheck the dates, but I think they were 1980 to go with the 001397 serial number.
Maybe I'll even have to figure out how to post pics... and join the rest of the brethren here in showing off my hardware.
