Still, he was right in that your guitar player should not put new strings on just before a show.

I had thought the same thing, but he has never had issues with his guitar staying in tune with new strings, and it was kind of a weird situation so I didn't worry about it. I let them do their thing and I do mine.

Saturday night...he asks, "so does your bass player play a 4 string or is he a real man and plays a 5?" I just stood there, staring at him (lace covered boobies and all) and simply said "4 string." He looked at me like I was scum and said "oh, don't worry, one day you can be a real bassist, like me." I almost hit him. What a douche...

Well, he was right about one thing...you're not a "real man". That probably works to your advantage. No one wants to see me trying to sports some "lace covered boobies".

I think too many musicians--probably most that I've met are arrogant to a point. It's not acceptable but it seems to be reality. The difference between arrogance and confidence seems to be that confidence doesn't need to belittle other people to feel worthwhile and arrogance does.
I'd just ignore the guy. He was sitting, you were playing, and you no doubt looked better doing it than he would have. Even his own friends seemed to think you rocked it.

At least he's replacing them. Some guitar players wait till they break in the middle of a set.

why shouldnt he replace strings before the show? in the past i replaced my strings on my main bass before every gig.

New strings go out of tune quickly, IME. Song to song almost.

never had problems with that, just give a good stretch and good to go, nothing like nice fresh strings IMO.

The few times I did make eye contact with him were pretty priceless... but a dedication would have been legit!

Even though I respect all those that play 5+ string basses, and I do in fact want a 6 string bass added to my roster I am a 4 string guy and when my territory is threatened on that I generally have a pretty good answer.

I grab my jazz 24, bend the Kahler trem bridge so the tip of the arm is touching my bass and play the E string (when my arm tip touches my bass the notes are all down a 4th)

I just keep playing that floppy e string and say "oh yeah, that sounds so much better" ^.^

Of course, how easy it is to discern going out of tune may depend on the mix (and how much everyone else is in tune or not), how much bending is done, how sensitive you are to absolute pitch, etc.

lol sorry i was refering to restringing my basses, Although my old guitarist would also always change strings before every gig, but he was using Sperzel locking tuners so im sure that would make a difference (not having multiple wraps around the post) i guess its all preference.

between songs mention you once heard a story that only 5 string bass players are legit, then ask the audience how your playing is.... with a positive feedback of an applause, that would of been gold.
