Colloquially, where do you live?

Seattle has a bunch of nicknames that marketing types gave it over the years. I'm not sure if it has a colloquial name. Some of the neighborhoods do.

My neice lives in Frisco. That is a town on the outskirts of Dallas.

In live in a town called El Cajon. I have heard it simply called "The Box," but also some variations of El Caghetto. A certain "audience" of locals refer to San Diego as Daygo. Some people joke that La Jolla is Spanish for "no parking."

I'm 10 miles out in the sticks but my address is Charlevoix /SHAR-la-voy/. Signs read Charlevoix the beautiful. We call it the beau-pitiful. Yes it's a pretty town, but at the expense of real jobs.

Lots of other neighboring towns have their nicknames.

East Jordan = Grease Jordan, with the foundry (nice down to earth folks too).

My uncle called it "the armpit of New England."

Mancelona = Mancetucky, or the armpit of Antrim County.

Ellsworth = Smellsworth, where I grew up and went to school. Similar situation to Mancelona but they cleaned it up.

Traverse City = Tragic City or Traffic City. The metropolis of northern Michigan. Went to college and worked there back in the day.

Saying "I live in the city" is just easier to say than "I live in San Francisco." We only use that locally. If I was in another part of the country and I said I live in the city I am sure it would mean somewhere else.

Yeah, even for me growing up 45 minutes away, we pretty much always called San Francisco The City, or possibly SF. Its kinda the same thing with calling California "Cali." Pretty much no one from there calls it that and I cringe just a little bit every time I hear it.

I live in "Hog Town" a name derived from it's past as the centre of the provinces slaughter houses. Now, I think the name simply reflects the greedy nature of Canada's largest city.

Me, I'm in Baytown, O-town or O-dot. Bytown was the original name of the city before it's current name became synonymous with government and politics for the rest of the country.

Us locals also call it: "The City That Fun Forgot".

I live in 'Nam.

That's the local nickname for Beckenham (Becken-"nam"), which is an unremarkable but pleasant place in south east London UK. You have to say "I was born in 'Nam" with a growly 'Apocalypse Now' voice, and locals will all recognise that you're referring to Beckenham, and nod in agreement. Started as a joke sometime in the 80s, now it's just a thing everyone says.

In the '50s, some people put their cars on a rake - lowered the front end. It was also called "dagoed," which was a reference to the place where there were a lot of early adopters: San Diego.

Many to us here in Sacramento used to listen to San Francisco-based Top 40 AM radio station KFRC back in the '70s, and the DJs often referred to San Francisco as The City.

I love Charlevoix. The only place on Lake Michigan that's worth a damn.

That's not true. Harbor Springs is nice too, but Charlevoix is a lovely town.
