compact powered subwoofer

I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a compact powered subwoofer for kick drum application.

Also keeping to a a budget price around $500 and under

My band has a house gig on a riverboat cruise and we are confined to space.

I've always wondered if that sub really worked. 200W and a 10 seems awfully small for a sub. Have you tried it live?

I don't think I'd trust a sub with a single 10" speaker. There is/was a company that makes a nice small compact active sub with 12" speakers. I can't remember which company it was but I had to a chance to buy 2 of them for $300! I shoulda bought them.

I have not, but I've read great reviews on them from picky sound reinforcement gear heads. Of course, it will not replace something like a QSC K Series sub.

Cool. There is a chance I might be able to rent one to try... but I have always thought it would be too underpowered.

But it won't be anytime soon.... we have bigger PA problems than lack of subs

Yeah, I'm thinking it might cover his riverboat gig. Then again, I've played hundreds of gigs with no subs so I guess it depends on how much kick you really want/need.

+1 We never run subs in my current band. Putting on my soundguy hat, I wish there was more kick drum in the mix. On the other hand, we are already too loud... adding more kick might be a bad move volume wise.

So I *want* more kick, not sure if we *need* it

You should be able to buy it for just about what your budget is.
It gets pretty decent reviews for it's price, may just fit the bill for you.

No doubt the other subs are good for larger venues but these seem perfect for many.

We have one of those, and since it has dual amps, we got the matching passive box as well, called the SB122. Put together, the two boxes put out about as much bass as a mid level 18", and as a two piece unit, with each box under 40 lbs, it's quite portable. Good for filling out sound in small bars. The size on each box is about the same as a typical pole mounted 12".

By itself, without the passive extension, it adds some bottom, but you'll find yourself wanting an SB122 to go with it. I got an SB2A for $330 on a blemished deal, and found an open box SB122 for $250. For under $600, it's a pretty decent portable sub system.

Couldn't find the SB2A on the EV website. This is what I found Invalid Link Removed It's labeled SB122 with one 400w amp.

I read that the SB2A is out of production and that's why they're selling for about $500 new. If it is, and you need one, you might want to jump on it.

i had the powered Samson 15 to go with my QSC K10 s & 8 s .

have good low's for keyboard sampled drums .. and live CD music ...

really not much bigger than the K series ..

speaker cab design has a lot to do with how far away the sub will be heard ... Phil Jones bass cabs work fine with tiny speakers .. !

maybe a small ported bass amp .. ?? x over would send the frequencies needed ...

if it's just for the stage volume and maybe dance floor right in front , .. some kind of small studio sub ... or get a mono sub amp and heavy duty car sub and build your own .. ??

i set my 15" sub up beside me with my monitor , setting it at 45 degrees across the room , .. trying to get a little extra low end all over the place ... worked fine ..

i don't think i'd buy a used sub on Ebay as it would probably be near death from idiots abuse ...

i tried the EV 12 wedge subs back when they first came out and i was dissappointed ... sold ...

i'd rather always use a sub versus cranking up full range cabs to move the ultra lows ... or over boosting the low Eq
on full range cabs and blowing up speakers or x overs ...
