- I suck, but nobody really notices
The spectra comp actually compresses each string differently. But in general, compressors add low end, lower output, and keep everything on an even keel. As in, remove dynamics from your playing.I'm new to compressors -- recently bought a TC Spectracomp and have been playing around with it at home, haven't had occasion to gig with it yet. I notice it adds a bassiness to the tone. When I have it on, and turn up the lone dial on this puppy, it increases the volume and basses up the tone. I have to crank up the treble on my amp to counteract this.
I am wondering if there is a compressor that just compresses, without boosting volume or changing the tone. I have read maybe a third of scubaduba's epic compressor comparison threads so far. If I'm understanding scuba's reviews correctly, it sounds like the MXR M87 comes pretty close to what I'm asking about. Compression without coloring the tone. Not sure about how much it boosts volume.
Scuba or anybody else, do I have that right? Are there other compressors that just compress?
