Conformity; what are your limits

If it's about school uniforms, I can tell you they are fantastic for several reasons.

Don't these schools do enough damage making all these kids think alike, now they have to make them look alike too? It's not a new idea, either. I first saw it in old newsreels from the 1930s, but it was hard to understand because the narration was in German.

I went to see a band who advertised start time at 20:00, but 20:00 was when they finished setting up.
They then started drinking beer & squeezing their dates until 21:00, when they actually started playing.

$5 their opening song was, 'Start Me Up', by the Stones...

I go my own way and act in accordance with my own beliefs, but still try to get along with other people and not force an issue over trivial matters. I prefer to pick my battles.

In group situations where I don't choose to go along with the consensus, and that becomes an issue, I'll usually excuse myself and go find some other people to do things with. I don't presume to tell other people what to do or think. The only behavior I accept responsibility for is my own.

See that's the thing. My belief is the opposite. By allowing brand names and other "expressive" form of dress, kids still learn to think alike. Only it's peer pressure and not the administration doing it. Also, what about those poor misguided kids that get all goth for a clue of years and when they try to go back "normal they are shunned by both goth and not goth alike?

Honestly, I think it frees kids to be themselves rather than depending on brand names and rock band t-shirts to do the talking for the.

Again, I have two daughters who have only a few choices of what to wear now. I think it's great socially, economically and practically.

Actually none of the above, TB has discussions about yellow t-shirts in a metal band, he gets complaints.. It has discussions regarding 432 v. 440 tuning, and someone posts he tunes to a different base frequency so the bass stands out. Someone questions why we need to conform to 4/4 time. And we haven't talked jazz. So the Conformity question is wide open.

Is school uniforms off topic, not if you want your band to wear blue Polo shirts and grey slacks.
I believe we should conform to band or music related items.

Ah. Well, in that case . ..... We're all different here. Our experiences have taken us down different roads. Some of us are sarcastic (myself iincluded).

I don't ask conformity to my ideas from anyone here. That would be boring. I only.ask that you and I show mutual respect to one another. And if you are going to disrespect me, it had better be funny. I love a good joke....even at my own expense.

We aren't here (at least I'm not) to "convert others to our way of thinking. Quite the opposite. I'm here to launch opinions and "facts" out there to see if others can blow them up with either their own experiences our sound reasoning.

I have said it here a bunch. I love it when my preconceived notions are blown to bits.

At 67 I'm learning about sex and food, going beyond my conformity. It's interesting, frustrating, embarrassing and delightful

RE: school uniforms

I had to go through the process of buying these in the Land of Smiles & it's a mess there, but has a purpose.

They wear uniforms all the way through college & it's very easy to tell which level they're in.

For instance, the younger kids wear bibs & the color of their bib tells the teachers what group they're in & tells the parents what level/class they're in.

This way it's just easier to herd them, before they're capable of following instructions very well.

Later they get to all wear virtually the same uniforms, until university/college level.

It's supposed to simplify dress code & also not allow kids to be singled out as dirt poor or ultra-rich, but the ultra-rich are separated by which schools they go to anyway.
It was also supposed to simplify buying clothes, because the students don't need to think about their fashion sense & try to outdo their classmates.

Unfortunately, the folks who sell the uniforms have a bit of a racket set up with the schools, and you must buy from only a particular brand (or certains stores) & they have to be monogramed. Yes, you get gouged for getting the monograms put on.

Upside, it's pretty easy to spot a kid skipping school, because the parents would be awfully suspicious if little Somchai wanted to take a change of clothes with him to school.
The police regularly monitor the internet/gaming shops for interlopers, but if the shop pays the cops enough, they don't check their shop.

Kids pick on each other about their choices of clothes & even hairstyles if they aren't wearing uniforms.
The kids with K-Mart tennis shoes aren't asked to participate in basketball, etc.

I'm not sure if my life would have been different in school in a uniform. My chosen uniform was black concert t's, black jeans, and black boots.
If you want to stand out, like the Goth look, you'll do it regardless. The college-age gals in Thailand get away with quite a lot. I'd post photos, but...

The guitar player is playing my old MIM Strat & he's much better at playing that old hunk of wood than I ever was.

Playing the local underground metal circuit I'll come across these groups that cheer for defiance and individual empowerment, but are so wrapped up in their high school clique mentality that peer conformity is their bread and butter. Glad to say that is not the majority, but they are out there.

It's nothing out of line IMO. Part of preparing them for the future, which is what school is supposed to do. Many jobs (fast food, brain surgeon, or anything in between) will require you to wear a uniform. When school's out they can wear whatever their parents deem appropriate.
