Also would like your take on Simon Gallup, a lot of comments on here don't support his ability as a bassist - obvious I disagree.

man, the cure's always had righteous bass lines - i love gallup's contributions, very melodic, imo. although iirc he's not the only one who would play bass on tunes, no? didn't robert smith sometimes break out the old fender vi? did they double up? don't remember from when i saw them live heh, long time ago.

Beck decided to change up his band and go more lo-fi this time around. :-( Trust me, I was bummed.

Then Trent called. :-)

Beck and I are homeys though, and always will be. I'll do more with him some day in the future.

Best,
JMJ

Classic case of falling up, isn't it? ;)

Justin, I don't know how you've managed to avoid being typecast into one bag, but I, for one, am amazed how you did it. It always seems like in the music business, nobody thinks people can do anything outside of the thing that brought them to the game, so to go from Beck to Ima Robot to Macy Gray to the Dixie Chicks to NIN is no small feat in this day and age.

Wow, NIN is by far my favorite band/artist....been listening to their(his) stuff since the first album (halo 2, ha). I'm thrilled that NIN is getting another great musician on bass for this tour.

I really enjoyed the latest album (the slip). Do you know what kind of basses trent used for the tracks on "the slip"? I have to say Echoplex is probably the song with the most prominent Bass. Kind of sounds like a stingray to me, and I think trent has used those in the past. Then again everything is effected pretty heavily so it's hard to tell, but that's the NIN way.

Hopefully I don't come off as a rabid fanboy but this is a really great time to be a NIN fan. Two records full bore records in the past year not to mention ghosts and year zero remixed.

I dunno, I just do what I do. I'm not "purposefully diverse", nor am I ever wanting to focus on something because it is similar to what I last did, for instance. It's all a bit haphazard.

Glad to hear you're backing the new move, thanks! Especially coming from a hardcore fan. Trent used various basses, but probably most often an American Deluxe P-Bass. He's also got other Fenders, a Stingray, etc.

I agree, it's a good time for NIN fans; lots of releases of a very high quality going on right now.

Best,
JMJ

Talk about versatility?

Just one question. Is there any smiling aloud when rehearsing or performing? ;)

In all seriousness, there's plenty of smiles all around. Everyone is super cool, and very much there to ultimately have a good time playing meaningful music.

During the show, I don't expect smiles to be normally in great supply, yet not taboo. Maybe like a Radiohead gig? I don't know.

Congrats JMJ, I'm really happy for you man! Love NIN man. Just wondering what you played/or jammed to during your audition with the band, could you name some songs(s), i'm just curious thats all!

Greetings from CANADA

A bunch of stuff. Some guitar songs from Downward Spiral & The Fragile; Only, The Collector and Love is Not Enough from With Teeth, a couple from new album. Good fun.

JMJ

Was just kidding those few pictures you all looked so serious.

But I guess trying to hammer out a full show before a huge tour has to very serious business.

Just to add I have had to the pleasure to catch you with Beck passing through Tulsa on 2 occasions great times, for sure.

Wow Justin I just learned the NIN news from this very thread here on talkbass and figured I would fanboy it up a bit :).......Congrats on the gig man! NIN was and still is very influential to me as a musician and person in general, I was a wee non bass playing middle school lad when Pretty Hate Machine came out....geez come to think of it I have that album on cassette, remember them things? I think it even has that digalog sticker on it (how is that for an obscure reference?) Tell Trent I lost my NIN Fixed CD but still have the case so I think I am entitled to one of those copies that is stuffed in his closet behind the Super Nintendo. Anyhow, I would be lying if I said NIN did not shape me in some way during my youth. All my best to you and the rest of NIN, Good Luck & have fun!

I'm wondering with coming to the gig with the recorded parts "record-perfect" ,probably bass tones very much in the ballpark of the recording, dotted I's and crossed T's (the way I would assume someone coming to a gig such as this SHOULD be expected to...? ) Does the type of artist you are currently rehearsing with still have suggestions, requests on your playing ?

Also, with this particular type of tour, I'm wondering how long the rehearsal/pre-production for what a two hour show like this takes/will take ?

With backing tracks and loops, click tracks and instrument transitions, it seems that the (fun) work/preparation may go a little farther than many tours, due to the type of production this is. Basically, this isn't guitar, bass and drums and I'd love to hear if you can comment at this time what this undertaking is like and what it's involving ?

Thanks, Loved Ima Robot in Ferndale, MI at the Magic Bag !
