Congratulations John Myung!!!

The fact that noone knew Paul Gray until he died
What's next? Metal isn't music, therefor you must be better than any Bassists who play Metal. also by using a pick you must automaticly be trash. Claiming he only played one string is just bias and ignorance.
people have this notion that the only Bassist worth liking is a Jazz one.
You must be reading a different thread. I get none of these impressions from reading this one.

I agree with all those who say Paul Gray was a good bassist, did what was needed for the song, was talented , etc etc. But no way in the world is he above guys like Sheehan, Pastorius, Jamerson, etc. who're placed beneath him in the list.

Paul Gray- world's 3rd best bassist. Joey Jordison- world's best drummer of the last 20 years. All thanks to MusicRadar.com.

I don't know what's more rediculous. The fact that noone knew Paul Gray until he died, or that bassists are indignant that he was even mentioned next to Jaco.

Just because it wasn't mentioned that he was a corpse doesn't mean most if not everyone here knew it, I knew he was dead, that just makes it worse imo, dead pity. Good bassist or not, you are either really skillful (like Myung and Jaco) to make the list or really influential like Geddy Lee and the Ox. Paul Gray was neither skillful enough to be notable like Jaco or Myung nor influential enough to leave a mark like Entwhistle or Geddy.

Claiming he only played one string is just bias and ignorance. BTW just so you know Paul Gray played pick and finger depending on the song, can you say the same? You'd think Bassists would be civilized and show less hatred to a dead man.

Where did I say Metal isn't music? Honestly, like I really want to know, how did you get from me saying I don't like Paul Gray's playing to Metal isn't music? Metal is not a music for bass players. Yeah there's that guy from Necrophagist who is probably one of the most amazing bass players ever, and there is that guy from Obscura or whatever it's called. There are certainly good bass players in Metal, but not very many. Yeah, playing on one string is an exaggeration, but the stuff he did does not warrant the #3 spot over guys like Entwistle and Wooten. I don't care if there is no criteria, it just shouldn't happen. And whenever I try and play Slipknot songs, I'm usually playing on the low B string, and sometimes venturing to the E. Maybe that's because I don't play oodles of Slipknot songs. Maybe he does have really interesting bass lines in some songs. Also, I did say "may he rest in peace". I know I wrote a small paragraph saying why I didn't think he deserved the #3 spot, but the guy is dead, and I'm not a completely heartless monster.

I think that the visionaries are the players that redefined the Bass and how it's played. Do I think Paul Gray was a visionary, or better than Geddy Lee? No. My point was that people were indigant that he was even there. I think Paul was a great player of a great band, does he deserve credit? Hell yea, but would people even read his name if he wasn't top10? The mere fact he was recognized pisses people off.

Thats one of the first lists ive seen that i can pretty much agree with. JPJ is a beast though, he should be higher

Acrimonus was talking about John Myung as being a great bassist and not Paul Gray.
"Paul Gray even being on that list..."

Dude, what?
Nobody's hating on Paul Gray, we're just saying that he's not better than ANYBODY he beat out on that list and certainly isn't #3 on the list.
I don't care if he's dead, he was not the #3 best bass player of all time.

You cannot make an objective list while being as unobjective as possible. What amuses me the most is i'm quite sure you judged Paul Gray soley on his band, this falls into the category of anyone who plays Metal can't be great.

Even if he did judge Paul Gray based solely on his band--wait, what does that even mean? Gray was part of the band. If he heard the music and didn't like it, Gray's playing was part of that music (obviously).

Second,"this falls into the category of anyone who plays Metal can't be great". What? If someone doesn't like Paul Gray's playing, that does not mean they are somehow biased against metal musicians in general. That is not a logical conclusion. Slipknot is not a proxy for all metal.:eyebrow:

If I wasn't clear I implied he had never even tried to listen to his playing and dismissed him. Is prejudice too harsh perhaps? I know if I implied Geddy didn't deserve to be here I'd be skinned. I challenge anyone to LISTEN to Paul. Otherwise it's just arrogance.

I'm sure Paul was great and all, but the fact that you have to challenge people to listen to him, definitely means the man does not deserve to be so high up on that list. I probably wouldn't even put him at the top hundred, because I don't know anything about him.

If he hasn't grasped the attention of a site like talkBASS.com, then he can't be higher up on the list than guys like Geddy, Wooten, Claypool, Entwistle and Pastorius, guys who revolutionized the music and changed the world with it.

Sorry and no offense, but if you think Paul Gray is the third best bass player on the planet, you're the one being arrogant, not to say ignorant.

You cannot make an objective list while being as unobjective as possible.
this is partially true. I don't think you can make a purely objective list of greatest bassists. I was trying to be as objective as possible however. If I were being what you claimed, my list would look something like this; Flea, Family Man, Cliff Burton, Sly Dunbar, Robert Sledge, etc.

What amuses me the most is i'm quite sure you judged Paul Gray soley on his band,
False.
this falls into the category of anyone who plays Metal can't be great.
this is also completely untrue. what is Steve Harris doing on my list then? Cliff Burton is one of my favorite bassists ever.

If I wasn't clear I implied he had never even tried to listen to his playing and dismissed him.
Please do not jump to conclusions, especially if all of your conclusions are as wrong as the ones you state here.
Is prejudice too harsh perhaps?
Probably. this isn't prejudice however. I love metal. You are the one who is acting prejudiced here.
I know if I implied Geddy didn't deserve to be here I'd be skinned.
and deservedly so. I would like to point out here that I can't stand Rush, yet rank Geddy easily in the top 10.
I challenge anyone to LISTEN to Paul. Otherwise it's just arrogance.
I just checked the play count on my iPod, and Slipknot ranks 19th out of all bands. I listen to them, and to Gray, quite often. I like Slipknot.

Paul Gray was a good and talented bassist. He did exactly what his band required of him, and did it well. I appreciate his playing. however, he is nowhere near the caliber of a musical genius along the lines of Jaco, Wooten, Deggy, Flea, or Jamerson.

When you are debating something, knee-jerk reactions and personal dismissals rarely come off well, especially when they are as completely unfounded as this one.
