Constantly Recycled Basses

That's the DP Custom I mentioned in the first post of the thread.

ahh, I see... I should have caught that. :D

That DP was here in ATL for a while. I saw it at the GC for nearly 6 months between two locations and then the last I saw it, it was at Atlanta Discount Music's old location about 2 years ago.

It was weird to see those deep caverns filled in with 'clear-coat' or something.

That thing was a beast.

Not only do I remember it, I was one of the owners. It was a solid bass and sounded great. I think the look had a lot to do with it getting shipped around but the quality was definitely there.

Did I buy it from you? I had it a couple years ago, and sold it to lamarjonz. I forget who he sold it to. when i bought it, i sought advice from another prior owner, whose name escapes me right now, but is probably another tb'er.

I know opaquebass also had it a while more recently. so that's four of us named, but i'm sure there are more.

I thought it looked, sounded, and definitely played great. I just sold it because i like 3 band active electronics on basses "like that" and because I was moving to 5 strings.

That silver Elrick is back on Link Removed for $800 plus shipping from CA. The seller swears there's nothing wrong with the neck or electronics.

What gives? Is the bass bad luck?

It's wierd, but I think there's this little "racetrack" that circulates among the internet-savvy bass playing subculture. 99% percent of instruments get bought and kept--either in use or under beds. But for that small subset of basses who get sucked into the TB/Bassgear/Ebay circuit--whoa! Life is exciting! (As long as the basses don't get sad and feel like no one loves them...) :help:

You didn't get it from me but opaquebass had it after me.

There isn't. The seller and I are both youth pastors out here; I played the Elrick at his church's retreat and the timing was such that I had to sell it, so he bought it. Now he wants to move up to a five string. And that's the whole story. I bought it for $800 and sold it to him for the same.

I really liked that silver one. I only sold it in order to graduate to a five string version that I bought from Halftooth:
Invalid Link Removed
I think the silver finish has a lot to do with it being sold a lot. Definitely distinctive.

Funky-
You got to quit reminding me about that one...that was a sweet bass!

As far as recycled basses go, I would say that probobly 50% of the time the basses that change hands have some sort flaw causing them to change hands so much. The other 50% of the time, I think some of thses basses are simply GAS casualties where these basses are dumped simply to make room for another.

This bass has been passed around more than a $2 hooker.

I believe that the silver Elrick has a basswood body, not an alder body, IIRC. I almost bought it from a guy in TX, who was sure that the body was basswood. I even asked Rob E about it once, and I believe he said it was basswood.
For 800 bucks, how bad could it be? Might be a good time to design a white pearloid pickguard for an Elrick, and go rEtro!

... and some serious color correction. since the carpet looks completely different in the two pics. Makes you wonder what color the basses are.

Probably not color correction so much as the camera probably used a different white balance setting for each picture. This happens to my pictures if I let my 300D auto-select white balance. I can shoot two pics of the exact same scene within seconds of each other, but if the camera uses different white balance settings then the pictures come out very different. Think of the difference between new white & white that's been antiqued by about 20 years of cigarette smoke, that's how much difference different white balance settings can make.
