I only like tort PGs on black, and that is really only because there aren't a lot of other red options out there. On a burst it is especially retro and hideous. I'm not a fan of bursts, but I can deal the dark burst of the mag 7 PJ bass or 70s jazz reissue and a black PG.
I'm not sure why this goofy "color" persists.

I think tort looks good on white, light blues, and greens. Sunburst or red should get black or gold anodized pickguards. Black should get black, gold anodized, or white pickguards.

Tort looks okay on some colors. I am more of a mint pickguard guy myself. Also, I feel ya on the burst look. Kinda common IMHO. Some people love it though, it is pretty much ALWAYS a finish option. I guess it kinda depends on the bass but jetglo on a Rick, faded sonic blue or Olympic white on a Fender are my preferences. Good luck with the conversion though.

Probably not. My observation has been that people are creatures of habit and stick to things they are familiar\comfortable with, regardless of sense or reason.

Here are my two tort guards. The green one is the stock guard. The other is a replacement for a black one.
