I will be playing out again soon. With a band! The band is starting as a 3 piece cover rock/blues/dance band playing "the usual suspects" Mustang, BEG, Tpetty. The guitarist and drummer are former bandmates, seasoned players and good friends of mine. I will be doing the lead vocals. It has been a long time since I have sung lead all night and am concerned about my stamina. I am hoping to get some ideas from the board on some instrumentals that would work to give me a break. We are Guitar/Bass/Drums and I'm open to all suggestions! Thanks.
Booker T and the MGs? Maybe some silly theme-tunes? Good ol' Peter Gunn theme, you don't have to sing and hardly play!
Inspector Gadget, The Muppets, Maxwell Davis (the original Batman soundtrack, the Green Hornet and more very very cool instrumental tunes)
"A Day At The Dog Races" By Little Feat would be awesome!! I've always been a big Jeff Beck Fan, maybe "Constipated Duck"?
I've always been a fan of "Long Hard Ride" by the Marshall Tucker Band. We occasionally use it as a break song. It's one of those you can play for 5 min. if necessary (I think MTB used to play a 10-12 min. version at their concerts).
My 5-piece band is all-instrumental. We do some Booker T & the MGs, some Ventures, some Meters, and a lot of rarities and B-sides that nobody's heard of. Instrumentals really make you work on your chops, because your parts are front-and-center, the whole time. Enjoy!
Song for my Father Penetration Europa Hideaway Funky Nassau Cissy Strut Pipeline Little Wing Lenny Breezin' Comin' Home Sleepwalk Apache
The "Water Song" by Hot Tuna. (you can listen to it here): http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=65462680
if you can play it "linus and lucy" also known as the peanuts theme song its a sweet instrumental but its all tapping
"them Changes" buddy Guy, or was it King Curtis version.... Other's did a vocal version also- we do both...so it depends how we feel- instrumental or vocal version!
I love that idea but I'm not sure my boy's will appreciate a solo piece like that. I'm already singing everything and hogging enough spotlight that way. That said, as a bass feature I always wanted to put a shorter version of School Daze out there and may push for that as an option as everybody can play on it. Thanks everyone! Please keep them coming!
Riviera Paradise? Is that SRV? I can't remember how it goes just now, just know that I liked it last I heard it. How about Europa? Surfing with the Alien Electric Rendevous La Villa Strangiato? Three piece? How's your guitar player fixed? I've done 'Buckaroo' 3 piece before and ran out of neck at one point. Hahahaha!
By fixed do you mean can he play or gear? The guitarist is really good and very seasoned but not a "shred" king and doesn't find that style of playing where he wants to go. Great tone (Soldano pre/boogie cab and Mansel Guitar). The Santana/Europa would sound close to perfect. Very solid Rhythm player. Drummer is excellent pocket player with some flash. Again, a seasoned been there done that player.
Well, both I guess? The Strangiato tune isn't a "shredder" so to speak, but a pretty cool instrumental done by a pretty talented trio! Maybe I was kidding a bit thinking that one could be pulled off live. Alot of stuff going on, the studio makes magic! I've never played it except with the record (I mean CD!). The Europa tune suits a trio well, but depends on your players. Bass part is pretty straight forward (depending on what your drummer wants to do). The guitar part has SOOO much feeling. I've played it with a brilliant guitar player, and several drummers, but could never consistently "get it" with the drummers. Maybe once or twice but thats it. Probably my fault. Thats the thing you know. If you get it with the drummer, your smokin'. Otherwise,... not so much. No matter what you play.
Pipeline is a good one ... we do it I play in a blues, R&B, and classic rock band and dug up this version with SRV playing with Dick Dale (gotta love the 80s hair). http://youtube.com/watch?v=GWw55XhTehg&feature=related Ya might also look at "Miserlou" by Dick Dale to everyone will know it from the movie Pulp Fiction. ... May want to check out some Link Wray too.
Pick up the Ventures album The Ventures in Space. Use it for inspiration and marvel at how amazing it sounds for the year it was recorded in. Also, look for some Link Wray stuff, that's usually easy stuff to learn and it sounds best when served up nice and raw.
