so we have consensus that a metal control plate would be better (even from the OP); allparts still lists one.

a metal plate is certainly superior functionally, as it won't break at the jack like all too many P-basses do. for the same reason, a wood control plate wouldn't cut it at all, it'll be way too fragile.

You know, I just realized that that control plate is plastic, not metal. I apologize if some of my prior suggestions about the paint didn't make sense (my bad). If you stay with the two-piece design, you should try to do it with a metal plate for durability at the jack. You can paint the metal... maybe Black? Next best option would be a different color plastic... probably Black? A wood control plate is risky... but you CAN put a wood veneer OVER a metal plate. I'm leaning towards this idea for the cosmetics and functionality. There are web sites that can make you a P-bass full pickguard out of wood... expensive but may be easiest solution for you.

No worries here. I apreciate your help and opinion.

well as an experiment i spray painted the control cover brown to see if i like it. it looks pretty cool if i do say so myself. i used spray paint for plastic, and we will see how it holds up. if it dosnt (which i think it wont) i will buy a brown pickguard and cut a new control plate. i will try and post a pic as soon as im able.

i tried to order one a while back and it was out of stock. i just figured it was discontinued. the cut i made on the pickguard pretty much makes that a non option now. ive never (knock on wood) had a plastic one break on me yet, so im going to stick with what i have for now. if i ever do this sort of thing again i will go with the metal control plate and cut the guard to fit it.
