I think anyone saying it's ugly is just being traditionalist. I once took a poll here of what pickguard I should get for my 3TS Jazz, since the white one made it look cheap. Almost everyone told me to get tort, and what did I do? I got white pearl, which is what I wanted in the first place, and I think it's one of the most beautiful instruments I've played.

I wouldn't consider popular opinion on talkbass to be worth much where aesthetics are concerned. There are tons of people who like tort, which almost always looks like bloody vomit.

I think "bloody vomit" was the original name for it, but the big whigs in marketing decided that wouldn't sell (heavy metal wasn't popular back then). Having owned a few tortoises in my life, I've never seen one that has a shell that even resembles it.

Anyway, OP, if you want my opinion on the matter (and take it for what it's worth - we all have our own preferences), I don't think it looks good because brown/black is a VERY hard combination to make look nice and it takes just the right balance and shade of each to look balanced or pleasantly contrasting to my eye. Aside from general bias against rosewood, it's the single biggest reason I dislike black basses with rosewood fretboards.

That being said, I really like the pickguard - it's got a sweet grain pattern and purplish hue. Looks to be very smooth and well-constructed. I would just like to see it on another bass.

Yeah my wife says it's not her fav color combo too. But that being said I played a show at an art studio last night, and people were constantly complementing it.....so......I think it's a love it or leave it thing.
