Coronavirus discussion thread - NO POLITICS, or "POLITICS by PROXY"

Why would they inflate the death rate? That would serve no purpose. Much more likely that it’s under reported.

Math. It isn't necessarily that the death rate was inflated, but assuming that the death rate isn't already under-reported, as time goes by if it is determined that more mild cases were going unreported it's possible that the death rate - typically represented as a fraction of reported cases, could decrease somewhat.

A lot is still unknown, and regardless it needs to be taken seriously.

If you don't think this is serious...the NBA just suspended it season until further notice. That is millions of dollars lost all because a player has a presumptive positive test. They were already prepared to play games without fans, now the season is on hold. This is hysteria or an over-reaction, it is the new reality.

A point about reported cases and statistics.

I had the flu this year, my whole family had it. Only one of us was actually tested and verified, but there was no doubt that we passed it around our house.

My local shut down a few days ago. We are one of the first schools in suburban New York to have a teacher confirmed. With the shutdown, my daughter got an unusual spiked fever that hung out for a few days (and is gone today). She tested negative for the flu, but there was no tests for corona at the time and we were only advised to take her to the hospital if she experienced breathing problems which she did not. A few cases popped up around town the same day and have been slowly growing in mild yet exponential numbers.

My daughter is fine now. Did she have the corona virus? Maybe...but we will never know. It was weird to go from normal to 100 and then spike up even higher and then gone. The point being that not everything gets reported and a lot of sick people are in denial that corona is even a possibility. There is still too much inaction...it’s not being taken seriously enough.

The player in question thought a couple days ago that everyone was overreacting, so he made it a point in his postgame interview to touch every microphone around him. Now he's tested positive. And that means everyone he played against in the past couple days was exposed, as anyone else in the game was in close contact, as were his teammates. And some of those players have faced others in the meantime. And many of them have probably seen family and friends. That's how this thing can spread.

Edit:

Traveling around the country shaking hands no less.

Sigh.

But the media will probably just keep scaring people instead.>

:rollno: It is time to stop this nonsense now. The media is not the problem. They are doing their job and reporting on a global viral pandemic. Vilifying the media for doing their jobs is not helping anything, and will not be tolerated in this thread. This is your only warning not to further politicize this issue.

This thread is being kept open because this is a subject that is bigger than all of us, because we are all connected as a community by our interest in and our love of music. In most cases, under the site rules anything that even smacks of politics is nipped in the bud here, and for good reason. But in the case of something that affects everyone on the entire planet, that affects all of our daily lives in a fundamental way, this thread is being kept open so we can share information, stories about how it is affecting our lives and communities, and some small measure of comfort with those we have all come to think of as extended family. In other words, it's too pervasive to not talk about, so we will try to keep this thread open.

I can do no more than entreat everyone to resist the urge to place blame on others at this time. This thing is a force of nature, and in a sense placing blame is tantamount to pointing a finger at nature itself. In essence, it is no more effective than attempting to turn back a hurricane by yelling and shaking your fist at it. Let's not stoop to that here.

We can do better than that. And for the most part, so far we have. Let's try to do our best to continue in that manner.

And to all my fellow lovers of music and brothers in bass who have shared this weird and sometimes wonderful space for part or all of the past two decades: be safe, do what you can to protect yourselves and those you love, and let's use this event as an excuse to come together rather than as an excuse to come apart.

Went to a psychiatric appt earlier. The elevator and bathroom were "out of order," as in they are closed due to fear of transmission. I get older doctors being afraid. Lots of doctors have died.

Hey! The number of cases in Iran are a good metric for the amount of trade (energy). Fun stuff. I'm, eh, neutral...

Stores are out of things to wipe butts, water (?), and isopropyl products. Stupid. That's not how you catch it, and unless you smoke and are old... ya...

Your point was so beautifully stated! Thank you Chris. I've learned much here on TB in the past few years, on a variety of subjects including this one, that are not bass and music related... It's really an incredible resource.

There is no shortage of un or misinformed people out there. I just heard that Corona beer sales are down 40% because of this virus :rollno:

Corona is down?!? Actually, please keep an eye on Russia and OPEC (AKA Saudi Arabia) and their sale price per barrel (55gal) of crude oil.

America is now the number one exporter of oil. Then we got Saudi ARAMCO, Russia, China, and eventually Venezuela will get USA companies like Exxon, Chevron, and I doubt Elf of CCP or anyone in the Eastern hemisphere. That wont happen. Longer boat ride.

Wait. Venezuela will have 2-4 american/UK companies in country, extracting oil within 90 days, maybe 60 days.

Bulletin from Italy: yesterday evening the President of Ministers' Council (chief in charge) communicated to the population that it is MANDATORY to shut all the activities not food or medical related. No restaurants, bus, clothes shop, plumber, taxi etc. Italy is shut down completely. But: please stop saying that this only affects older people in a big way, because this is NOT true. Huge complications, risk of severe damages and even death are for everyone. And if it is not for yourself, you'll easily pass it to somebody near yourself. And it will become as a terrible, horrible lottery. All (ALL) artists here stopped acting, singing, playing, shooting movies or Tv shows. No crowds on Millionaire or similar. Just telephone or streaming stuff.

Chapeau, Chris.

I'm going to stick with the websites for the CDC and health department of the state I live in for up to date info about COVID-19.

That's probably ideal. Plans are probably in place in various government organizations. The WHO has declared a pandemic situation, the situation has gotten fairly rough in a couple of places already. There's no need to panic, even in an extreme situation panic just means you suffer twice as much.

They say that social isolation does a lot to help mitigate the spread of the disease, in this light the cancellation of large social gatherings seems fairly common sense. People are still bound to congregate in smaller social settings, and large amounts of traffic and congregation still occur as people literally go about their daily lives - going to work, going to buy stuff, it ranges from kinda hard to impossible for most people to NOT go out. There's not much to do about that when some employees can be workaholics (or really just aren't thinking about this stuff) and some employers can have crap policies on sick days. What are some people going to do? Risk furthering an impoverished situation by losing a job by taking one sick day too many? Stay at home until they can't pay rent? Not everybody has enough money for that to be a non-issue. Population density can't help either. Go figure, I've really got nothing to say that hasn't already been said.
