When I was in the Army (20 years ago) one of the guys in our unit was Vietnamese, 1st generation immigrant, thick accent, etc. and his wife was from the Phillipines, same deal, 1st generation. Very young couple, both 18 or 19. We went to their place for dinner a couple times, all home cooked by the teenage Phillipino wife. I don't know what that little girl did in her kitchen but to this day, I've still never had an eggroll even half as good as hers. She went all out, several courses, and every single thing was just mouth-watering good, but those eggrolls still stick in my mind after all this time, I could eat them by the dozen.
I don't know much about the Phillipines, or even if she was cooking more Vietnamese style for her husband, but their daughters know their way around a kitchen over there and have some of the best food I've ever had in my entire life.
