Last time I ate traditional Phillipino food, it was all fantastic until I took a big bite of some strange fruit that was supposed to be a delicacy over there.... My stomach blew the second it hit my throat... Most scarring food memory EVER and is the only food that has made me vomit from just eating it...

Bitter melon is definitely an acquired taste. I've never had durian but I hear it tastes and smells like butt! BTW, there are FAR more disguting things in Filipino cuisine. Look up balut!

I've had bitter melon. I got it as part of a CSA box. I forgot what I did...I think I sauteeed it with some onions and a little sugar to offset the bitterness. It was an interesting experience

Bitter melon is good with ribs, in small doses. Durian is pretty tasty but the smell isn't, and the texture is the most off-putting, it's like snot.

I tried Durian a couple of years ago when I was in Munich. It smells horrific and the texture was rather slimy. To me, it tasted disgusting, sort of onion meets stanky socks. About a year later, I gave durian fruit ice cream a whirl and was reminded of all the things I didn't like about the fruit itself. No amount of sugar, cream, eggs, and ice cream deliciousness was enough to make durian fruit palatable.
