From the tip money from Saturday night's gig I received a $20 that looks and feels weird. It's crinkley and just feels funny. What should I do?
If you contact law enforcement, limit what you say. If you want to officially meet w/law enforcement tho', I'd recommend having legal representation.

Don't think for a minute that police, etc., are taking your word for anything in any official meeting. By official, I mean any meeting with them that is pre-arranged to discuss a legal matter. Random chat w/police on the street is unofficial.

Cops or bank.

But just FYI, if it IS counterfeit the person who put it in the jar likely was unaware that it was. Because they didn’t get any real money in exchange.
I was on a gig where we got paid in cash, hotel bar in Bay Ridge Brooklyn. One night guy comes in, sits at the bar. Buys a drink, talking to the bar tender. Pays with a $20, gets change. Orders another drink, pays with a $20, gets change. Does that twice more. So he ends up passing 4 counterfeit bills getting about $40 in real money in change for an hour and a half’s work.
Santa Claus did that to Archie Bunker in his bar on christmass once.

I used to work for Xerox in the early 90's when very high quality color print engines were coupled with high dpi digital scanners to make full color copiers.

Once a year, we'd have a meeting with field agents of the Secret Service. The SS is part of the Treasury Department and is always involved in counterfeit operations, whether some hack in a bedroom with his HP, all the way to tremendously sophisticated worldwide schemes: North Korea is one of the largest counterfeiters of US currency in the world.

These copiers would make really good looking money. Essentially you were legal if it was the wrong size, or the correct dimensions in an obviously wrong color. Right size, right color(s), and depending on the amounts you made and circulated, you would go to jail for a longer sentence than if you murdered somebody. They're SERIOUS about this stuff.

No problem with you winding up innocently with a random bogus 20, but if there's a lot more of them showing up in your area, there's Feds with their ear to the ground.

One day, I had a brand new 20 I got at the bank, and I made an enlarged copy of it, about the size of a license plate. I took it home, gave it to my wife and said, 'See, I told you I'd make Big Money working for Xerox!'

We even have a problem here now of people counterfeiting $2 coins, which if anyone here has seen a twoonie, it's not exactly an easy coin to replicate given that its 2 different metal pieces.

Two ways to check without a marker.

The garment below his neck will feel grainy, not smooth.

See the 20 lower right just above "Twenty Dollars" spelled out ?
Hold the bill at chest level and look straight at it. It's Gold. Now tilt the top of the bill away from you. If it's real it will turn green.

Either put it in a change machine (they are made to detect which notes are right) or go to a bank and say that you got this in the tip jar and you are not sure if it genuine. They will check and if it is, congratz - and if it isn't they will just destroy it.

A tip is a bonus, over and above your fee, its an optional payment or gift so you haven't really lost anything.
You could leave it in the bucket so people follow suit on tips, or you could infer thats the value of your BL's band as deterimed by some wag..
