Covers Better Than The Original

Maybe the title of this thread should be interpreted as simply "Covers of original recordings." Many of the offerings would make more sense in that context (from both a historical and musical perspective, imo, ymmv, tuv, xyz, etc., etc. ...)). Or maybe, "Covers with louder guitars and more recent recording tech". (Or the ever popular, "Covers of black artists by white guys" :roflmao:)

Original - Hank Williams

Cover George Thorogood

Hank Williams: Renowned as one of the great originators in all of American music, with "Move It On Over" in particular lying at the root of rockabilly and rock 'n' roll to come (I mean, just listen to "Rock Around the Clock" after listening to this song, for one!), and containing elements of country, western swing, jazz (that guitar solo) ... all kinds of influential, and a toe tappin' rhythm to boot. And, uh, actually original ... :)

George Thorogood: Warmed over white boy blues guitar and ersatz blues growl, wannabe all the way ... within that framework it's an ok version, for what it is ... a little slow for my taste ... eh ...

Or “covers that I like better than the original”. It’s all subjective anyway.

Clearly. Which explains a lot. Of course, what the thread title actually says, with its words doncha know ... is, "Covers Better Than The Original", which is a bit different than your interpretation of it.

Really? Here's the original post:

"I've always liked Carly Simon's "You Belong to Me" but I think Anita Baker took it to the moon. Are there any more examples where the cover was better than the original recording? " (my bold)

Notice that the OP used the words liked, think, and better. His likes, his thoughts, his preference.

That's why it IS SUBJECTIVE.

There is NO unit of measure with which to measure the quality of music.

And last, but not least

My interpretation of the meaning of this thread is BETTER than yours.

So there.

:) Your interpretation ignores the actual title, as well that very title's placement as a direct question: "examples where the cover was better than the original recording?"

So there. Or so whatever. Glad you acknowledge that your selections don't involve an attempt at objective process. So, it's "what I like ..." Ok.

Ever heard the phrase, "You can't judge a book by looking at the cover?"

Your interpretation ignores the book.
Looking at the ... "cover" ;) No pun intended, I'm sure. :)

Your interpretation of "covers better than" ignores historical context, musical context, and technological context (including poor transfers to YouTube of a number of cited examples), and just goes for "Me likey" ... which is a valid thing to feel as far as it goes ("If it sounds good ... "), though a rather limited viewpoint - but again, I'm glad to have seen it acknowledged that that's your criterion.

The original version of "You're No Good:"

A far superior version:

And perhaps the best . . . Depending upon one's stylistic and genre proclivities:

Personally, I choose door #2, although I've always appreciated Van Halen's 1st 2 albums.
