No doubt, it's an amazing bass! I've owned, and still have, some very nice basses that I either heard or read impressive things about. Most of the information I received was on point, but to be 'the best' bass must come from hands on/real time experience.

And for what Chuck is offering these first batch TR basses for makes it very tempting to buy another and have two 'the best' bass!

Those Roscoe basses are great basses and I'm glad I own three of them. The Roscoe Club thread is full of a bunch of happy owners and I'm proud to be one of them. I'd like to see this CP Thornton Club thread as active as that thread or any other high quality built bass Club thread, but I am a little selfish, and owning three CP Thornton basses puts me in a very small exclusive club!

I recorded the gig from the previous Friday and I'm going to post some sound bites from the two basses after I pull them from my Tascam into Garageband and into iTunes to copy them. I promise I will not play a 'Identify That Bass' game with you, although that would be fun and interesting...but I won't!

Okay, so here are samples from two songs using the two different basses. As promised, I'm not going to ask you to ID which bass is playing on which track....that would be childish...but if you want to take a guess!

And I don't own any rights to this material and all the legal stuff that I'm not aware of...

The recording isn't super clear but I think I'm hearing the active circuitry on sample A and passive circuitry with the J style pickups on sample B

I knew you would hear the differences, Chuck! Sorry for the quality of the sound, and the playing for that matter. These recordings were recorded using the microphone on a Tascam placed in a corner behind the band in the venue, then copied into Garageband, then into iTunes and finally copied into SoundCloud.

...and the passive setting in Sample B was Neck Vol-10, Bridge Vol-10, and Tone-10. Those Nordstrand NJ5SV pups really sound great in this bass!

I love the Nordstrand J style pickups. What settings did you use on the TR-5 ? My guess would be Vol. Vol. Passive Tone all on 10. Bass boosted up 1/4, Mid cut 1/4, Treble left in center.

It's hard to tell how I had the TR-5 EQ'd on Friday, since I played it yesterday in church service. I would think it was pretty close to the settings now, which are Vol. Vol. Tone all on 10. Bass boosted 1/4, Mid center, Treble boosted 1/4.
I can leave the EQ setting and toggle the active/passive and like what I hear.
But actually, I'm in the habit of EQing my Genzler amp at a constant setting and then working from the bass. So, I might really be doing this all wrong and should set the amp to neutral EQ and shape my sound only from my bass only, when playing active basses. One of our problems in church is that we don't do a sound check with full instrumentation. I'm lucky to just get setup before meditation starts and ends with the service music, which will give me the chance to change what I'm hearing.

I know exactly what you're talking about, it amazes me what the pressure of the gig or just Murphy's Law can do to the sound of your equipment. The band had practice the day before a gig and everything sounded perfect in the rehearsal room, the next day I loaded the gear into my truck got to the gig set everything up but foolishly waited till sound check to make sure everything was right. Turn on my amp the band starts a song and no sound coming out of my amp. This is like 15 min. before we're supposed to start, I use a TC Blacksmith amp in a rack with a BBC Maximizer with two Bergantino HD 210 cabs and a pedalboard with a Aguilar Tone Hammer & Catalinbread SFT for further tone shaping of the Blacksmith and a Aquilar Octamizer and MXR Fuzz. So here I am trouble shooting everything 15 min. before we're supposed to start to find out there was something wrong with the Maximizer which worked perfectly the day before the gig & believe it or not the day after the gig. That one was Murphy's Law but this one was the pressure of the gig, we just finished playing Red by King Crimson where I use the fuzz and went into Led Boots by Jeff Beck and I can't figure out why my tone is so bad until I look down and see the fuzz still on.

Thank you Daniel, I loved playing Red. We also did Zoot Allures by Zappa which was another tune that was a blast to play.

I just listened to Red and Zoot Allures for the first time. Interesting songs. What bass did you use on Zoot Allures and what was the bass EQ to get that tone?

Yeah they're great tunes aren't they Nightman !!!
I used Nordstrand J style in one of my basses like your #31, passive circuitry, neck pickup volume on 10, bridge pickup volume down 1/4 turn, tone down 1/2 turn. Here's a link to the band I was in doing Zoot Allures.
