My Dad was a woodwind player. I remember him using Cornhusker's Lotion when I was a kid to take care of his hands and fingers. It's great stuff and I have a bottle at home.

My wife, who is a Nurse Practitioner, has lately been using "The Naked Bee" line of products. They have a product called "Serious Hand Repair Cream" that is pretty good. It does have a choice of fragrances, though. I've used the Orange Blossom scent and it's not bad at all...sort of like bubble-gum, actually. Pretty good line of products all around IMO.

I know someone who had cracking hands (not on tips - joints, other areas) and when he stopped drinking energy drinks, the cracks went away.

I don't like to use lotion because it makes my skin too soft for playing bass - my tips start to get a little worn. I'll use a little once in a while but not on days I have to play.

Hope one of the suggestions mentioned help you out my friend.

My girlfriend is a bit of a health nut in the sense that anything she uses has to be organic and cannot contain any ingredients that she can't pronounce... :D

Anyways, we use coconut oil and almond oil around our house, and I have personally seen a significant difference in how moisturized my skin stays throughout the day from using that over more traditional lotions and moisturizers. I think she gets the stuff from places like GNC or the Vitamin Shoppe.

+1 for coconut oil; I usually apply before I go to sleep.

Working hands. I’ve tried them all and this stuff is amazing. It’s not oily or greasy. Although if you’re washing your hands a lot, reapplication is required regardless of what you’re using.

When nothing else works - and for me not much does - I use this.

I use those for some of my tasks but not all. Trying to wear them a little more this time of year probably isn't a bad idea. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a box of them everywhere I work. Not every office has extra large though. I should probably keep a box of those with me. I can wear large for a few minutes but they get tight pretty quickly.

Ya didn't quite read far enough down in my original post. :D It's listed among the things that did not work for me. Here's the tube I used almost half of yesterday. ;)

I use the thick tube version of Eucerin.

Another recommendation for Eucerin here.

The trick is to be sure to do one last application at bedtime after you are done washing your hands for the day so it can soak in and heal the damage.

Also, close those cracks with Second Skin (or generic liquid bandage) prior to applying the Eucerin. I sometimes use multiple layers of liquid bandage letting each one dry thoroughly before the next.

Yeah, you think you might not be using it right? You used a half a tube? In one day? First off, that’s way too much. It only takes a little and you have to work it into the worst areas. Oh, you’re not going to heal overnight either, sorry.

I was, of course, exaggerating. I have gone through one of the little tubs and about half that tube in the last couple of weeks. I put a decent amount in each palm and then wrap my hand around each fingertip and work it in. It's getting in there. For a few minutes my fingertips are coated to the poi t of almost slippery. Then it's almost as if it evaporates. It simply doesn't last long at all. I know a lot of people swear by it, but it simply doesn't work for me.

Have you tried shea butter? We use this stuff and it is very good.

You can also make your own lotion at home with shea butter, coconut oil, and olive oil. You can add your favorite smelling essential oil if you want it scented.
