I work in a retirement home and wash my hands every 10 minutes or so. I apply O'Keeffe's liberally quite often but my skin around the cuticles still cracks. What works for me is A&D ointment rubbed in thoroughly and left to absorb 10 minutes. Do this and In a week your fingertips will thank you. I recommend doing this after dinner, it gets you out of dish detail.

+1 on lubriderm or Eucerin for the long-term drying problem.
When it does crack, you've got to cover the wound to let skin underneath heal though. Try painting NewSkin - there are other brands that sting less - into the cracked parts daily, and sanding it down with an emery board 10 min or so later. The liquid bandage keeps the wound from drying out, and the skin from separating more, though it will as it heals anyway. Smoothing it down , ime , keeps you from peeling the skin around the cut from peeling back , especially while playing. A new layer in the morning with some smoothing keeps the liquid bandage layer flexible and attached to the healing bits as the dead skin on top wears off and you wash it .

I think he deserves a high five.

For my job I have to wash my hands constantly. This causes my skin to get really dry. Around the nails in particular my skin is literally cracking open. It has gone from simply annoying to painful.

Edit to add: Pics have been added a few posts down. And I drink TONS of water daily. Tons! My reusable water bottles are a litre and I go through probably 6 or so in a work day. I am constantly pounding water.

What hasn’t worked?
O’Keeffe’s Working Hands- works fine for about five minutes until it either soaks in or dries up.

Aquaphor - (sp) somehow does fine for the rest of my hands but my fingertips are still cracked all to pieces

Most “regular” lotions my wife keeps around the house

Help me out. Bonus point if it isn’t to “girly”. I would prefer I didn’t smell like lilacs and lavender. :D
Same problem with me ... cracks and holes opening on the finger tips and along the sides of the tips ... sometimes very painful ... called it “contact eczema” ... you can try cortisonic creames ... they are effective in reducing the extent of the problem, which, however will reappear unchanged when stopping the treatment, but you should see a dermatologist ... in my case this issue is exacerbated during dry winters ... I didn’t have many problems when I was working in Singapore

IME, the hard bits of skin around your cuticles needs to trimmed. I also smooth them with an emery board.
No lotion will soften them. You may need to bandage fingers (sticky bandages)and put something like Aquaphor on first until they heal. Then apply treatment after each time you wash your hands. At home too.

For pain, lidocaine balm will work: [This invalid link has been removed]
