Have you tried disposable gloves for when you have to put your hands in water?

You should have access to disposable latex/nitrile gloves from work, so maybe use them, or maybe even household gloves. Protection has to be better than using creams and stuff after the event.

I work on equipment a lot. Using tools and turning small knobs and screws with gloves on is a PITA. I can (and will) wear them more often, but I can't wear them all day.

It should help some, but in my case it's not a total solution.

get a can of Watkins beeswax. works wonders on hands and feet
I’ve used Watkins Petrocarbo salve, which works great.

OK, gang. While picking up some stocking stuffers for Mrs.Fingers today I tallied up the advice and got some stuff. Here's what I'll start with.

Bag Balm, Corn Buskers, New Skin and a cuticle tool.

I'll also wear gloves more for a while so I can scrub my hands less. There was so much chaos I forgot to look for some milder soap with Aloe in it but that'll be next.

Thanks for all the advice! I'll swing back by after a while and update the results

I forgot to mention when I posted my, less than helpful, "Big Girls Blouse" post....

That my Uncle Ted used to get horribly cracked hands due to the fact that he was a bricklayer....

The lime in the mortar, the roughness of the bricks and working outside in the winter all contributed....

His "cure" was to mix a tablespoon of butter with a tablespoon of white sugar and rub the mixture into his hands as thoroughly as possible.....

I always called him crazy but he swore that it helped a lot....

Hope this proves to be slightly more helpful than my last post if you try it...:)

Okay, so you have lots of replies, including, I think, this stuff, but not in English, so here's my pitch.

When I was working in food service, a guy started who was taking Accutane, an acne medication that dries the crap out of your skin. His hands were constantly cracked and bleeding so i got him some of this stuff. Within 3 days his hands looked human again.
It's about $4 per bottle (that should last all winter) and it's greasy as heck, so don't expect to play bass or use your phone right after putting it on. Wear it at night and let it do its magic. I really can't recommend it highly enough.
Good luck!
I use this. I just squeeze a tiny bit on each fingernail and massage into the surrounding skin. Works best if you apply to slightly damp skin.

I had the same problem years ago - very painful! I've found two things combined that solved the problem. First, I wear gloves outside any time the temp is below 40F - religiously. Second is a product containing Borage oil when your hands feel dry - google it, it works. I use a brand of cream called "Shikai". A little goes a long way. Good thing, it's pretty costly. But I've kept the problem at bay for the last ten years or so with these 2 steps (other creams help too, but the gloves outside are the real key, IME). Good luck!

OK, so I pushed back and trimmed my cuticles. They were a wreck. I painted some new skin in the one bad crack. And I applied the first coat of Bag Balm. (Nobody warned me about how amazing it doesn't smell.)

So we'll see. Hopefully my fingertips will be healthier here in a few weeks.

The soaps in those med facilities incorporate mucho alcohol and other ingredients as an antiseptic/anti-whatever that basically kills germs by drying them to death, which I'm sure plays a part in what's going on with your hands. I have the same situation with my work. It might help to pack your own special soap, formulated for sissy hands like you (we) have, as opposed to constantly searching for the perfect lotion.

Seems to work for me.

Years ago I worked for my BiL who owns a saw and tool shop. I spent most of he day with my hands in water/coolant and tungsten carbide dust. Though inert, the dust was so fine that it could not be felt and would be nearly impossible to remove from the cracks, lines, whorles and fingerprints of the hands without using harsh hand cleaners and, literally, a stiff bristled scrub brush. From November through May my hands were a cracked, dirty, bleeding mess. I found that water based lotions were useless and Vaseline was too thin. The Watkins Petro carbo salve was the only thing that gave me even a little releif.

The Corn Huskers Lotion is a real great product.
If you get those cold dry weather cracks in your fingers what I do is get a Chap Stick and rub it on there. Viola, clears it up in a few days. Just keep the 'crack' full of it. I'll send you a bill.:D
