I'm not debating the ok or not ok aspect of it. My point is, to all those that get so incensed by it is, it's everywhere and it's not going away. If something an "entertainer" says or does, bothers me enough. I just stop listening to them.

Uh huh......and if an ad seems to lean a specific political direction, many won't apply.

Many of us believe that bands should be politics-neutral. I'd dare say most understand that some aren't.

I still disagree. They are looking for something specific, which thay have every right to do and there's nothing wrong with that. Replace to sociopolitical criteria with any criteria they feel is important. They are in need of a bass player because they haven't found the right bass player for them. It's not complicated.

You're totally right, they are looking for something very specific: a pro player who knows a massive library of country tunes and the number system, but somehow has no gigs and openly loathes a TV pundit they've never met.

The absurdity of that ask is why it was posted here, and why we're all laughing about it

I get it.

I don't play country, I don't particularly like country that isn't old school and I barely even listen to that, I don't lead a band, I'm not in a band other than as a sub. I'm totally unbiased. See how I had to explain all of that even though my first sentence should be enough for reasonable people? I "had to" explain otherwise anybody could assume anything and then reply on false assumptions of my bias.

Being straight from the get-go saves a lot of time. Magnify that time savings by a lot in regards to even finding good playing candidates, let alone candidates on the same page for the medium and long run. If he just says "great bassist needed for dedicated band with lots of gigs," though that should/could be enough to get the point across there would be many multiples of inappropriate guys responding to the ad. I bet he's posting from bad experience in being less specific. He added a little humor, too, and made it clear to me that this is a band of brothers, agree or disagree with their views, and every member should be like-minded on some critical things.

See, he can't win. Be less precise and get too many innapropriate candidates or be clear and get trolled by internet people with mental issues, or maybe you guys just have the hate in your hearts but won't troll. How does not fully buying into the extreme views of a person like Rachel Maddow make one categorically a jerkweasel? Or Racist or whatever other nonsense a bunch of you have concluded from that statement?

I'm guessing if you separate the wheat from the chaff on the initial contact it would save a lot more time than spending the next year waiting on the perfect replacement to come along. How long was Jason Newsted just a hired hand before a philosophically aligned band "brother" was found to replace his trifflin behind. Just think of the millions that could have been made holding out for a round peg for their round hole rather than struggling all those years to take the stage with their square peg of a bass player who spoiled the after show hang.

Imagine how that ad would work written for a Ford dealer looking for service techs.

"If you don't know the part number for a 66 Mustang carburetor and the programming sequence for a 2017 F-150 keyless entry fob off the top or your head and you get your feelings hurt by dirty jokes about a chevy, don't waste our time. Likewise if you are one of those fragile little flowers with nothing but import experience, go find some nancy boy merk-a-dees dealer with tea cozies on the service desk because we don't need the likes of you down here where only real rough and tumble men make an honest living."

Granted, if you are looking for some new pals to get together and kill a few brews while pickin and a grinnin on a saridey night, you certainly don't want to wind up in a drunken brawl with your harpsichordist over politics or fragile feelings, but if the object is to concoct a salable stew of music, the cooks need only be concerned with their portion of the recipe.

:bassist::hyper::hyper::bassist: It's "absurd" to people they couldn't care less about, which actually makes it not absurd. On a positive note, there haven't been a lot of fun, divisive, entertaining threads here as of late!!

Do you even realize the term "dogwhistle" is in itself a loaded (liberal) pejorative term?
You are literally "I know you are but what am I"-ing me. Come on!

"Dogwhistle" isn't a "loaded (liberal) pejorative term", it's a description of what that guy is doing when he uses the word "snowflake" in that context: he is using the word to convey a meaning that only some readers will pick up on, the same way that dog whistles are pitched so high that only dogs (and probably lead guitar players?) can hear them.

Again, whether you agree with the guy or not there's no need to keep getting defensive that people have picked up on what he's doing and are pointing it out.

I'm a lib. I voted for Sanders and Hilary but the snowflake thing exists especially around college towns. You know the ones who, for example, lose their shinola if you mention a woman has a great body. Of course women talk about men's bodies all day long and Rachel Maddow doesn't run a whole show about it.

Understood. I have zero use for holier than though PC posturing myself. But if that's the case, there's far better ways to call it than by a snarky juvenile name. But that's me. Suffering frim a steady diet of hearing some people being called jerks by other even bigger jerks over the last year is starting to get a little old.

And judt for the record I'm neither a liberal, a conservative, or neo crypto-fascist in my personal politics. I'm more a political non-euclidian. Much to the frustration of my friends and family who keep trying to slot me into any one category. ;)

Grateful Dead, of whom I'm not a big fan, have a long tradition of looking backwards to folk, americana, and bluegrass for their own music. I'm pretty sure that's why our Narcissist mentioned them.

Mugre

Understood. But the ad keeps implying they're looking for "real country," not just somebody who knows some country music…like maybe the Dead do? :cautious:

I'm definitely neither a Dead nor a Country music fan. But I do know (and like) a few Dead and Country songs.

And I just found it gunny seeing them spouting they only want the "real deal" (who doesn't commute in 45 minutes) for their crackerjack operation - and then go in to mention the Dead in the same ad.

What can I say? Guess I'm just getting more easily amused these days.

I find it extremely hilarious when individuals are sensitive to another individual's sensitivities. It seems to be a thing as far as I can tell.

There seems to be a severe disconnect with the dialectical method in the world today. There are many of us who blindly identify with any opinion that seems to fit in the range of identity that we are currently maintaining. Why do we feel the need to maintain these personas at the expense of our own understanding and good will?

Path of least resistance. Doesn't require acquisition of knowledge.

Right, but the name is half the point because (to those in the know) it signals a lot more than just "we want a bass player who doesn't mind adult jokes onstage."

The meaning of the phrase itself is one thing, maybe not too hard to figure out from the context. But the fact that "special snowflake" is also an inside reference in right-wing online communities (as well as full-on racist and misogynist ones), is the other part of the puzzle here:

'Cuck,' 'snowflake,' 'masculinist': A guide to the language of the 'alt-right'

EDIT: it'd be like dropping "tort with flats" into a conversation with some strangers at a gig. The ones that don't post on TB will think you are literally just talking about a tortoiseshell pickguard with flatwound strings, but somebody is going to go "aha, a fellow TB poster!" when they hear you say that.

Looks like another example of that silly frog cartoon to me.....

+1. The use of the term "snowflake" is a red flag. It shows that these guys have a certain tribal point of view and anyone who doesn't share it will not be accepted. Sort of anathema to what a guy would look for in an artistic situation, in my opinion.
It's only a red flag to someone they're not interested in. Why the outrage in this thread? Because they have their own views and say so to keep people that wouldn't like them from responding? Better than finding out later IMHO.
