Craigslist naccissist

Understood. I have zero use for holier than though PC posturing myself. But if that's the case, there's far better ways to call it than by a snarky juvenile name. But that's me. Suffering frim a steady diet of hearing some people being called jerks by other even bigger jerks over the last year is starting to get a little old.

And judt for the record I'm neither a liberal, a conservative, or neo crypto-fascist in my personal politics. I'm more a political non-euclidian. Much to the frustration of my friends and family who keep trying to slot me into any one category. ;)

(snip)

Understood on all points and well said. I wasn't defending or condoning, just adding what I hope was a apt perspective.

Just for the record, I think we think alike. As I am wont to say, I wear no team's jersey.

good day,

Mugre

You are literally "I know you are but what am I"-ing me. Come on!

"Dogwhistle" isn't a "loaded (liberal) pejorative term", it's a description of what that guy is doing when he uses the word "snowflake" in that context: he is using the word to convey a meaning that only some readers will pick up on, the same way that dog whistles are pitched so high that only dogs (and probably lead guitar players?) can hear them.

Again, whether you agree with the guy or not there's no need to keep getting defensive that people have picked up on what he's doing and are pointing it out.

The term is used exclusively by liberals against non liberals. It is a way to call a person a racist without actually using the "R" word. Or, to generally to say "XXX" is a "dogwhistle". The context is that as the term "dogwhistle" has been used, anything said by the person quoted should be ignored/ridiculed/ discounted as the initiator of the comment is a racist.

I still disagree. They are looking for something specific, which thay have every right to do and there's nothing wrong with that. Replace to sociopolitical criteria with any criteria they feel is important. They are in need of a bass player because they haven't found the right bass player for them. It's not complicated.

Unfortunately, it is that complicated. We live in a tightly interdependent and interlinked society with near instantaneous unfiltered communication mechanisms. In the computer world (my work world) that is what is referred to as a "closely coupled" system.

The big problem with closely coupled systems is that input gets rapidly magnified, and the entire system soon develops a tendency towards uncontrolled oscillation. Fancy way of saying anything that's tightly linked, and with no comunication buffer mechanisms in place, soon spins completely out of control from even the most minor stimulus.

Sound familiar?

The ancient city of Rome was destined to have become the political and social mess it eventually became because (to borrow the words from a letter written by the emperor Claudius) it was: "A city in which nothing ever escapes notice - or commentary."

Again, sound familiar? Those old Romans had it nailed. ;)

So despite all the issues I had with the CL post, I actually did apply. (I don't know why, but I did). Here is my response:

Email:
Saw your ad on craigslist.

You're looking for a pro bassist, that currently has no gigs, knows all the country songs, and knows the number system. Seems like a big ask.

I don't fit all those requirements, but I'm a great bass player that can reach that goal quickly. I'm 33 with a degree in jazz. I like country, don't know many tunes but am a quick learn. I can follow any chord numbers, diagrams, names you can throw at me, as I have a high knowledge of theory. I can hold a groove. Don't play upright, and I'm not gonna try.

So you're probably not interested, but if you have trouble filling all your criteria, I'm in between bands (not for long I imagine). I can be up to speed as quick as you like.

Demo Attached. Warning, it's top 40, rock:

Thanks,
Drew

Interested to hear the response. I think this post got lost in the din of the thread but let us know how it turns out.

Path of least resistance. Doesn't require acquisition of knowledge.
I would argue that it is the path of more resistance as they are literally resisting another point of view :D

And I would add "new" in front of knowledge, but now I'm being a nitpick: for the sake of good conversation, I assure you!

It is good when people are trying to learn and we have so much available knowledge out there; it is not so good when all one does is constantly seek out information that reinforces their own identity. If we could truly understand (I believe we all will eventually) the lack of separation between things and see ourselves as we truly are...we may be a bit surprised!

I get it.

I don't play country, I don't particularly like country that isn't old school and I barely even listen to that, I don't lead a band, I'm not in a band other than as a sub. I'm totally unbiased. See how I had to explain all of that even though my first sentence should be enough for reasonable people? I "had to" explain otherwise anybody could assume anything and then reply on false assumptions of my bias.

Being straight from the get-go saves a lot of time. Magnify that time savings by a lot in regards to even finding good playing candidates, let alone candidates on the same page for the medium and long run. If he just says "great bassist needed for dedicated band with lots of gigs," though that should/could be enough to get the point across there would be many multiples of inappropriate guys responding to the ad. I bet he's posting from bad experience in being less specific. He added a little humor, too, and made it clear to me that this is a band of brothers, agree or disagree with their views, and every member should be like-minded on some critical things.

See, he can't win. Be less precise and get too many innapropriate candidates or be clear and get trolled by internet people with mental issues, or maybe you guys just have the hate in your hearts but won't troll. How does not fully buying into the extreme views of a person like Rachel Maddow make one categorically a jerkweasel? Or Racist or whatever other nonsense a bunch of you have concluded from that statement?
BRAVO!!! Someone gets it!

I'm not a liberal, I wasn't calling this guy a racist, and I posted an article clearly explaining how the phrase "special snowflake" has become an inside reference among members of right-wing online communities.

Whatever you're getting defensive about, don't put it on me.

...But they are a great player that knows the material, what difference does their thought process make?

Because if you are getting paid to play then you are there to earn a little filthy lucre by knowing the material and demonstrating that knowledge by being a skillful converter of knowledge to music, not to riff on the things about the job site that annoy you.

I'm a serious alcoholic but i can play in bars with no problem because it is a job site. I'm not being paid to be a pundit expressing my personal dissatisfaction with my working conditions or the many people i see being enabled in their quest to find their own personal bottom. I'm not being paid to set the crowd or the establishment right I'm being paid first to be part of the musical foundation on stage and second to help the bar make enough bank to pay the band and still make more than they would with a jukebox.

Even though i am as far from a professional musician as could ever be imagined, i do my best to be a professional individual if i'm being paid to play.

If i'm playing for nothing because some overzealous BL has threatened me with a sound thrashing if i refuse then i'm gonna carp right up to the limit of that tyrants patience, but if it was my choice to do it for free or stay home...

I leave all the anghst and agita to those fragile souls unable to seperate their personal lives from their professional lives.

Yeah, honestly, when I read ads like that I'm thankful for the red flags. Saves a lot of time on either side. I'm a pretty liberal guy and my current main band is full of conservatives, so I can hang, but if it's an issue for these guys I'd rather know up front.
Ithink what might be a red flag to one person may well be well be attractive to someone else.

If you're not into politics, then you might not want to join a band like The Clash, Crass or Skrewdriver.

Other bands might not be party political, but openly support LGBT rights campains, or the NRA, or whatever might someone uncomfortable.

Some bands put "420 friendly" in their ads. It's a good thing to know.

I guess what I meant is laziness and it's SO evident today. A clear example is politics. People align themselves with a party or ideology and just get in lock step and stop looking into the actual issues (assuming they ever did look into them).

It is probably appropriate to remember that, in all things relational, whether religious, political, or, simply "the hang", it is the differences, not the similarities, that are the defining issues.

I would be a little disturbed if any of my kids thought that every 62-year-old man with white hair and beard, etc. was their dad, simply on the basis of similarities. And I can flat guarantee you that my wife would find fault with the idea of every beautiful 56-year-old brunette being, because of all the similarities, my wife!

If you read the label on a box of D-Con mouse poison (not advertising for them, just have a point to make) you can see that well in excess of 99% of the content is good, healthy mouse-food...and quite attractive. As I recall, it was 0.01% Warfarin, or whatever the actual poison is.

So, whatever is "toxic" to you, in a bandmate, or even a CL advertisement, is the "deal-breaker" for you...regardless of all the things that are right. But not everyone finds the same things toxic. I love peanut butter, but I have an extended family member who would literally die if she just took a taste. So I never use peanut oil in cooking anything to which she might be exposed.

It seems to me that the CL posters were simply applying the truth-in-labeling rules to themselves in that regard, at least. And those who are allergic to peanuts are going into anaphylactic shock from reading the label. I don't try to feed meat to vegetarians, but none of my vegetarian friends forbid me to eat it, either.

There are two sides to the tolerance issue, it seems.

Clearly they didn't lol.

Oh…I think they did.

But it's one thing know the truth - and an entirely different thing to have sufficent motivation and backbone to act upon it.
