Craigslist ... the stupid never ends.

From an actual CL ad in Charlotte, NC:

Bass guitar needed!!! (Gaston County)

Bass guitar needed for a beginner. My wife plays the guitar and I promised her that we would play together by the end of this year. I'm looking for someone to DONATE a bass that I can LEARN on. It doesn't have to be in perfect condition. I just need something to start with. No scams please!!! Only respond if you are serious. I am able to pick it up immediately. Thanks in advance!

•Location: Gaston County
•it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

No scams and only respond if you're serious. Got it.

I'm glad I'm old and will be dead soon. :(

This is what our society has come to, "I don't want to work for it, I just want it free".

Kind of like the MegaBus tour that the guy wanted other musicians to donate the use of their equipment so the others can do a tour.

People think everything should be free,

The CL poster wasn't asking for money. But somebody interested in learning an instrument and not willing or able to fund the interest... that's cool. Who knows, that beater bass you pass along might turn on a kid to music and save them from who-knows-what kind of trouble. Ask them to pass it along to another student when they are through with it and the world is changed in a small way for the better.

Yeah, before my last move, the girlfriend and I had a ton of books, cd's and dvd's we were probably never going to watch, read or listen to ever again... so we did an open house, told some friends to come over and pick whatever they wanted...

Sometimes, people just have stuff they don't use... and aren't really the kind of people who feel the need to squeeze every last cent out of it... that just seems dickish.

I've given away guitars and amps over the years, or donated strings or cables. But I did it for a kid who wanted to learn or someone I knew who was laid up sick, or just a brother down on his luck. But I didn't read any hard luck stories in the post. This wasn't a disabled person asking for help or a kid asking for a loaner to learn on. This is a grown man, married, begging for someone to give him something and then warning about scammers and seriousness.

Maybe I'm old, but what the hell happen to sweating for things you want? If he loved his wife maybe he could put in some overtime or sell something else to get a Squire bass to learn on. She's not worth a little sacrifice? This is ridiculous and a sad commentary that some of you think it's perfectly OK for a presumably healthy male to beg instead of work for something and then get all high and mighty about who responds.

bass player with vocals
Send me a link of your tunes or a list of your covers
I really want to be a front man. But it seems to irritate people when I say let's start a band and be rock stars.

I am moving out of my apartment this month. I got money.
Just don't have a place to jam but I have a van. And really once u need after u got a bass player and a van is a drummer.

Who's going with me?

No one sees anything wrong with the ad? lol

It's easily as douchey as those morons who think they can sell their used TU2s for $100 ( and they are out there). No problem with a guy asking $1000 for his Epiphone Les Paul either huh? I mean it doesn't hurt to ask, right? lol

The guy even warns of scammers. Of which he so obviously is one.

Total douchenozzle.

A few years ago, I was selling a bass on my local craigslist. One guy was particularly interested. He asked a lot of questions and asked for a dozen specific pictures. Then, we spent several days negotiating price. Once we agreed, we set a day to meet at the local Guitar Center. When I got there, he was standing near the entrance. He came out to my car and took an excessively long period of time inspecting the bass. Then came the kicker......he asked if I would just give him the bass. He had a sob story about his life long passion and losing his job....divorce and whatnot. I figured he was just trying to negotiate me down on price, so I put the bass back in it's case, put it back in my trunk, chastized him for wasting my time. He kept giving me stories until I got in my car and closed the door, then he started walking back to his car.

His ride? A brand new (still had the temp tag) BMW 5 series............

Yes. He's a scammer and a douche. Craigslist has an inordinate amount of these A-holes.

Doesn't really affect me. When I buy stuff on CL I know exactly what the stuff is worth, but other less educated buyers no doubt get ripped off all the time.

Internet equivalent of standing on an off ramp and asking for free stuff.

Anyone who has to resort to mind numbing boredom of hanging around an off ramp all-day enduring a constant fog of carbon monoxide and occasional verbal abuse from passers-by.

I always give those poor people a few bucks and thank god my life has not gotten that bad.

Now the guy in the BMW wanting a free bass.... yeah, uh. no.
