Roscoe SKB3005 (fretted)
Spanish Cedar body
Myrtle Burl top
Wenge neck laminate
Macassar Ebony (w/sapwood) fingerboard
Wood 12th fret inlay (myrtle from the top wood)
Diamondwood nut
Black hardware
Nordstrand DC pickups with Series/Parallel/Single coil switch
Audere 4-band pre

Needless to say, I'm quite excited

yeah, I wouldn't be able to do 3 sets with that monster... especially standing up!

That was my first thought when Russ Laggan proposed the woods,
I've been promised more than once it will come in around 10lbs.
We'll find out one fine day. Going on 16 months wait(Initial post of details here.)
The body profile wedges from 1.5" at the bridge to little more than the thickness of the (low profile) neck on the other end.
Russ did a mostly wenge/bubinga 5ver that came in under 9 lbs.

RLK, I've said this before but I really like you bass. It is a beautiful piece of spalted maple and it is looking really nice now that it is coming together. I can't wait to see that one fininshed.

Spicoli, love the woods you are using (especially the bass body). They are going to look really great together.

Jonah, I really like your bass design...very beautiful though I can't quite put my finger on why or what it is. Keep us informed with progress please.

Tom, what a year...at least 4 custom basses. Man, I wouldn't know where to start with all that lot. Looking forward to seeing the end results.

Hey,

I placed an Order for an MTD 535-24 last month. I cant wait, hopefully she will be everything I am looking for. I spoke with Mike at length about my choices for woods and he made me pretty confident that this will be what I am looking for. This should have a nice fat sound with lots of bite and should get better with age, he said it will almost sound like Wenge but it will still be different.

24-frets
Ash neck
Maple FB (Or birdseye maple depending on if he gets it in time)
Ash body
Buckeye burl top.
Matching truss rod cover and peg head (Buckeye)

I have to give a big shout out to Mike and the guys at Basscentral for dealing with my constant questions and a couple of order changes..

T minus 6 months to go...


A quick question for others who have ordered a custom MTD.. Did you get progress pics or did you have to ask mike for them? I dont want to bug Mike so if I have to ask for them than I can do without.

I took my bass to a refin shop in April of '06, and I'm still waiting for it.

The guy called two months ago, with an estimate that my bass would be ready in about four weeks. After waiting seven weeks I called him back to ask what was happening with it, and the guy got sort of pissy, as if I was rushing him along or something. But he did say that he would probably start to work on it in three or four weeks.

Screw it, I'm not going to call him any more. Hopefully he'll be kind enough to let me know when it's finished, whenever that is.

Edword, really? I wouldn't stand for that guff. Get your instrument back from that guy. Over a year for a refinish? Most custom basses (without a wait time) take less than that. Including finishing time.

dli - I've thought about getting back my bass and going elsewhere, but am still holding out (for now). The shop is considered one of the best refinners (sorry, won't mention the name), and I've seen some great examples of their work. They were recommended to me by a friend who is a professional luthier.

I'll give it some more time, but not a whole lot more. Hopefully I'll have something positive to post about this in the near future.

Although I'm building it, the wait is still killing me! The top and fretboard turned out better than I could've ever imagined. It's getting close, and this thread seemed the place to find folks that feel my pain..........

I'm ordering this this week:

Changes will be a chechen fingerboard option, as well as an Aggy 3-band eq w/ switchable mid freqs, and an Active/Passive toggle switch if they can make it work.

5-6 mo's build time, unfortunately...
