My Benavente '51 arrived Monday. However, wouldn't you know it, I was on the road and got back last night. It looks and plays great, I'm anxious to hear it through my rig next week. Of course, photo's soon!

Ok, so I'm joining the club...

I dropped the payment for my first custom on last monday, its 22:00 Friday here and is my belief that the payment still hasn't even been claimed from the bank...

its going to be a loong wait :(

Were you waiting on Barts from the factory? If so, there is a chance it could ship soon. I was in that situation. Mine was due to ship on 08/17/04, but I just got a call from Zon last night saying it was ready to ship. :hyper:

Well...Finally got it! Unfortunately, I haven't had time to do more pics...but it is sweet!

Its a MPG Level 4 Fretless. Swamp ash body w/ quilted maple top in trans blue, carbon fiber reinforced neck with a stabilized macassar ebony fretboard. Bart quad coils w/ three way switch w/ the bart 3 band eq and an ABM piezo bridge w/ piezo blend. Just sweet...too bad he says never again on the piezo...got the only one!

I love what the piezos do for fretless. What's great is that these are wired into the eq, so I can eq the piezos! Can't do that with the Zon... The only beef that I have is that there's a center detent on the piezo buffer that is supposed to be a 50/50 mix, but the 50/50 mix seems to be (audibly) at the 25/75 (mag to piezo level). I'm wondering if the piezo p/u's are too hot for the blend? I have to do a little research... Matt wired them up the way the diagrams said...so we'll see what I can do. Aside from having to make smaller adjustments on the piezo side, the thing is amazingly comfortable and very versatile tone wise. This is the first bass that I've owned that the full bridge pan is sonically usable (not just for an effect)!

I'm not as crazy about the sound of the piezos alone on my Curbow fretless, and I think Greg was never entirely happy with the piezos he was using at the time (can't wait to hear what he thinks of the RMCs I have him putting in the 6!) However, they do add a nice "stringiness" when blended with the magnetic pickup.

What sort of preamp is the piezo buffer? If it's the same Bart unit that's in my Curbow, there may be a little pot inside the cavity that controls the gain of the piezo relative to the magnetics...

RMC are much better than anything out there, no comparison.

Looks like Rick Turner piezos are just as good if not better I'll be trying them on the next batch.

The Curbow fretless XT-33 is something I got used--I don't really know what piezos are in it, but I suspect it's some sort of acoustic guitar style under-bridge unit since the pickups aren't embedded in the saddles themselves (no wires). The preamp is a Bart unit, and there's a Bart piezo buffer ("LZ" something) as well, which has a little gain pot attached to it.

The Curbow 6 that's being built has RMC piezo saddles and the RMC Powerdrive circuit, which does a blend/buffer of the piezoes and also gives Roland-compatible 13-pin output to run a MIDI converter or V-bass, then it has the standard Bart NTMB EQ. By all accounts, the RMC stuff is the cream of the crop--I can't wait to hear it myself.
