I had one of the Electrolines with the Turner piezos. They were indeed very good sounding, though they really needed their own passive tone control (something Rick's doing on his current Electrolines). They would have been even better on a hollow/semi-hollow instrument like the Curbow 6. :p

Since this is both my first custom bass and my first fretless, I am very excited about it. I think it's supposed to be 7-8 months.

Woohoo, let the gluing begin. Been trading emails with my luthier. Got my next project narrowed down. He built me a 6-string fretted bass last year. This year it will be a 6-string fretless. The body wings will have curly redwood facings from a piece of lumber that I bought over the summer. The core will be mahogany with maple veneer between the core and facings. The veneer creates very attractive lines on the body after the shaping is done. We are also looking at a cocobolo fingerboard and Nordstrand pickups with covers carved from redwood burl.

I'm totally stoked.

Karl Hoyt is a great builder, but unfortunately has gone into semi-retirement. Fortunately for me, he is still accepting projects from previous customers.

This is the one that he built last spring for me:

my custom bass has been finished for a while now, but the case to ship it still hasn't been completed. ARGH!

updates.... hmmm... the most exciting thing is the body "wings" are now cut to the exact size with the roundover. hopefully, they'll be glued to the body this weekend. then comes all the sanding/carving... it's getting closer, but it's still got a ways to go. :hmm: From what I hear it's looking really good though! :hyper:

Come to think of it - it's officially a year in the making now! :eek:

well, if we weren't gigging/touring so much, I'd be all over that (particularly since I've never been to the shop!), but right now it's just not practical. although if the bass doesn't show up before we get our slot playing with Karl Denson, I may have to book up north!
