Custom DIY 2x15 cab build

John, I'd love to get a schematic of the x-over you used to get that 6nd410 to sound sweet. I love the efficiency but not the clack. Also, I talked to someone about how you sealed your pair of 3015's and that they sounded good. He said that he wasn't sure about how they would hold up long term due to thermal limits of neo. I don't know anything about that though. I love your cab though.

i didn't use a 6nd410. i used an Eminence 630SS and then bought about 6 different inductor coils and 6 different caps that were in the range of what i wanted and then 'massaged' the XO using my ear and then looked at it with TrueRTA and a spectrum analyzer. i'd have to open up the cab and measure what values i used since it was about a year and a half ago.

IMO, sealed neo cabs are fine. i have a couple of 2x10 sealed neo cabs (that are now 5 years old) that i've pushed very hard for hours and hours on a lot of gigs and they still sound like the day i installed them, maybe better now that they're fully broken in.

BTW, i picked up all of the wood for cab #2 this afternoon. this time i took my scale with me and found some more of the same lightweight but stiff plywood that weighs 1 to 1 1/2lbs less per 2'x4' sheet than i used on the first one so i expect the second cab to be even a little lighter.

Skimmed over the last few posts here bit re: the Berg 610. I've played a guys a couple times in a jam setting, not too far away from the size of place you'd use one to carry the room. Amplification was a Marshall JMP. Nice cab for sure but didn't quite live up to the hype. Good hear great sound in there but if ya wanna be picky, was always a bit of a muddled sound to it. Then again, I listen to stuff all over the room. Including right in front of the cab, but also further away, off to the side, over where the guitarist, singer, and drummer are so I can hear what they're hearing. Seems to me, a pair of 4015LF's sealed, with the mid of your choice, which might involve a select 8", to keep the treble rolloff but spread it around, would be a good step up. IMO there. The Beeg is no slouch at all, good sounding cab, but the hype is too great, and it would seem small compared to a top notch sealed LF compliment like the 4015LF paired with the right mid. "Right mid" in this case not in any way meaning the loudest, highest responding one....in fact, that would work against you....or me rather.

i just tried the Faital 15PR400's with the ports sealed for the first time, and they do sound great with them closed. with them sealed, it immediately feels and sounds more like what i'm used to playing thru, but everytime i try it with them open, it sounds so good (a little bigger and fuller) it's really hard to tell which way i like it best.

I am interested to see how you rate the two cabs head to head as far as overall power handling, fullness of lows, and low mid punch are concerned. From your clips I liked the meaty mids of the 3015 and the clear top end of the 15pr400. Would it be lunacy to use one of each with the Faital on top?

in my opinion, when you mix drivers, rather than getting the best of both, you often get a compromise of either. in this case, it might actually work well since they're fairly similarly rated and have about the same xmax, but i'm going to keep one cab loaded with 3015's and the other with the Faitals, since i like them in their own right.

I guess for scientific purposes only, you should try to run both boxes off an SVT, just for science of course.

just finished getting the woodwork completed on the second 2x15 cab. this one's 1 3/4lbs lighter than the first one was at this stage of the build since i was able to weigh the plywood while i was selecting it.

i mounted the 3015's in it so i could A/B them with the Faital 15PR400's. to A/B them before took about 15 minutes since i had to unmount and remount the different 15's and by that time, although it was noticeable, it was hard to really get a really clear idea of their ouput level and tonal differences. now it takes 2 seconds. it's kinda late so i couldn't really crank them up but the faitals are noticeably louder (more efficient) with the same amp settings. the Faitals are also more open and transparent sounding, whereas the 3015's a bit immediate responding and punchier. they both feel like have about the same amount of low end.

i just found out this afternoon that my car needs a new fuel pump so if i get back from my mechanic early enough tomorrow afternoon, i'll try to post a couple of sound clips to demonstrate what i mean.

I'll bet you could replace the fuel pump if you wanted to, too ;)

i think that i probably could, but on a bimmer it's inside of the gas tank and i don't really want to deal with opening up the tank to get to it.

Beautiful work as always...looking forward to clips.

thanks Jimmy! ;)

here's two new clips of the cabs.
just for something different than the first ones, this time i used roundwound stainless strings on a P bass for them. please excuse the sloppy playing ;). i just wanted to get them done quickly.
