Custom DIY 2x15 cab build

Nice clips. I hear a lot of what's been mentioned. The Faitals have a slightly more relaxed feel with nice overtones; very musical while the Eminence has a little more punch and grind. Can't go wrong either way as it seems more a matter of taste. :smug:

It's good the Faital 15PR400 works in the same enclosure with the same tuning as the Eminence 3015. The Faital didn't model for me well at all in WinISD and seems to be excursion limited at a significantly lower wattage. The 3015 models very well but without this 215 as a go-by I'm not sure what size and tuning to pick for the 15PR400.

damn dude,...the pr sounds a good bit more open, like representant of everything that's going on, although the 3015 is no slouch at all. It seems the 3015 may muffle things a bit, but not much, which may actually be better in some situations but given my druthers, I'd pick the PR, It sounds a a little more like my 2way rig. Even though it's a little brighter, it brings out a little more of the intracacies of your playing. Like that or not, it makes you a better player and helps you sound good in a mix, even though it may sound too bright on it's own. I take it these are on axis measurements? It'd be cool to hear what happens about 40 degrees off axis.

New impressions here...got to hear it at home....:)

John, I really like the sound of your cab sealed using the 3015's. Very nice.

i like them too, but i actually prefer the 15PR400's. i do like the 3015's so much that i'm going to build another dedicated cab just like the first one for the 3015's, then i can really do some side-by-side A/B comparisons.
i'm going to go to home depot later today with my scale (this time) and pick out some more of the plywood for it.

John, have you ever tried an NV610 cab? If so, how would it compare, sealed as well?

Rpsands, I used 4 or 5 versions of nearful and fearful cabs. I plugged both ports on one of them and liked it better than ported, I can't remember if I plugged just one. Probably did. It still wasn't right for me.

I'd like to see a 2x15 sealed cab where the 15's are crossed over as high as possible to get some growl, to a mid that actually sounds good, instead of clacky.

Have you heard one with the fEarful crossover, a properly treated midrange chamber, and the right sized box and ports? I'm still curious as to whether what you're hearing is the way the 18sound sounds without enough stuffing in the box and a mediocre crossover.

I suspect you might prefer the sound of 6PR150s in the 1515/66, all that aside. I keep hoping GB is going to turn that model loose. It's got a little more baked in tone than the 6nm410/6nd410 and it'll appeal to some folks.

* I keep hoping my SVT->Port plugged 1515/66 recordings will be done soon. I think it'll change a lot of minds about fEarfuls copping the sealed ampeg tone :)

I've never had good luck with the 18sound but, Im not sure about how well they were stuffed. Looking at the specs though, the 18sound starts dropping off hard after 2khz, for off-axis response. Maybe I was just really sensative to the beaming going on.

I take it that you used the 4015lf and the eminence pro mid? How did that go?

Don't wanna hijack John's thread - his great cab certainly deserves it's own space! But to answer your question, no, neither of those. I'll post something somewhere at some point... :)

nope, i've never tried the NV610, but many have said that they sound similar to a sealed fridge.

IMO, if a 6.5" mid sounds 'clacky', the XO isn't done correctly. it took me quite a while to dial in the XO to get my version of a 1212/6 (two 3012LF's/6.5" Eminence 630SS) to get it where it had no clack but a sweet smooth mid and top end. i tried ALOT of inductor coil and cap values until it got it just where i wanted it.

.....one of the reasons i like the round ports on my 2x15 is so that i can easily block them if i want it to be a sealed cab, but i generally run them open.

How would you compare your 1212/6 to the 2x15 in terms of volume, punch, and tone?

the 2x15 can put out quite a bit more SPL level. the 1212/6 sounds a bit more even and balanced in the mids and top end and also has a bit more low end. to me, my 1212/6 really doesn't 'sound' like it's a 2 way cab, but actually more like a full range cab with very few peaks and valleys from 45hz to 6Khz. the XO is 'invisible' (seamless/inaudible)
the 2x15 rolls off at about 4Khz.

John, I'd love to get a schematic of the x-over you used to get that 6nd410 to sound sweet. I love the efficiency but not the clack. Also, I talked to someone about how you sealed your pair of 3015's and that they sounded good. He said that he wasn't sure about how they would hold up long term due to thermal limits of neo. I don't know anything about that though. I love your cab though.
