I alway thought that dustcaps didn't do anything to the sound. Now, aluminum ones look cooler in a retro style 215 cab.I can't tell the difference between the chrome or cloth dust caps, and I think most people wouldn't either, just sayin'

Interested in this answer as well as the changes in cabinet volume if the top speaker was angled slightly toward the player with a 2-piece front baffle board.
I posted this question before, any speaker experts care to chime in? If I was running WinISD on a pc, I'd do it myself...
What cab volume and tuning would be recommended for two 3015 drivers? As someone who uses 200 and 300 watt amps, my main objective wouldn't necessarily be for obtaining the max spl the drivers are capable of, it'd be more about getting the best tone.
well, call me crazy (cuz i probably am) but i was playing the cab alot more with the streamliner and doing more A/B tests between the aluminum cap and the paper one, and with the streamliner in particular, i actually prefer the paper cap on it (like OldogNewTrick stated). IMO, the streamliner 900 has a 'bite' in it's upper mids and the aluminum cap was making it more obvious and a bit harsh (IMO, sounds ALOT smoother with a paper cap), and since this cab was built to go with it, i picked up a new OEM paper one from orange county speaker today. i carefully removed the aluminum one (which was perfectly installed) and glued the new paper one back on so now the speakers are stock again. i had to cut the aluminum one off, then slightly soften the glue and peel it's aluminum edge off, so now all i'm out is one aluminum cap and the cost of a new paper one (which are cheap).
i loved the look of the aluminum one but i'm more interested in tone than looks.

that was actually quite the interesting read, thanks for posting it! I'm still standing by the statement that such a subtlety in tone would be lost on most people - particularly laypeople. I've been playing for 5 years and can't really tell the difference. I'm not trying to say that 5 years is comparable to johnk's experience, nearly as much as I'm trying to say that I've got more experience than the average layperson.
having played the Streamliner through the JBLs and the 3015 w/aluminum cap you're saying the latter is a little "brasher" (for want of a better word) than the JBL w/the SL?
yup. my SVT and Acoustic 370 amps are smooth and balanced in their high end whereas the STM900 has a little harshness thing going on at around 1.8-2khz. the ally cap was exposing it on the 3015, but the JBL's are much more balanced in their high end.
i also replaced the NOS Mullard ECC83 that i had in V1 (which i really liked) with a NOS RCA 7025. i think that i may like the RCA better in this amp. so now, i'm running three NOS RCA 7025's in the STM900.

OTOH, That upper mid spike you're hearing may make your tone better at the gig...?
wonder if the glue/aluminum cap/cone assembly needs breaking in to smooth things out further, just wondering aloud![]()
Have you had a chance to use the Starliner in a band rehearsal or gig setting yet?
