Custom DIY 2x15 cab build

3015s just sound thicker to me

edit:

After listening through some quality headphones it seems that the Faitals are pretty even top to bottom whereas the eminence have more low mid presence. From the modeling, I would say that the Faitals would not take all the streamliner can dish out but the eminence should.

Hi John. Those clips are great. Classic Cream. Very nice playing.

As for tone, both sound great to me. But if I had to choose, I think I prefer the Faitals. The lower and middle registers just sounded "right" to me. A little more vintage sounding. I would give the nod to the 3015's on the higher runs though. The Faitals came on a little too strong for me when you went up high. I thought the 3015's had a more pleasing transition up top. But I would be happy to gig either cab. Nice work -- as always!

i think that they are both capable of what the ST900 can dish out, and IME, if you push the drivers into distortion, the Faitals distort a little earlier, but do it more gracefully than the 3015's.

That Faital has the brightest 4k response I ever heard in a speaker with 4k response. I think Faital does that speaker a disservice by saying it tops out at 4k. The chart on it says it tops out at 5k on axis but 4k 45 degrees off axis. Meanwhile, if you're going to stick a mic in front of it, that's what counts IMHO.

I'll tell you, there are things I like about both speakers. They do sound like they have the same low end through headphones, but the Faital's clearly brighter and a little less upper middy. If I had to choose one, I'd go with the Faitals but I could find a reason to have both.

So is it just my imagination or do these cabs sound tighter and cleaner than cabs with ceramics? What's your impression of them vs your ported 15's with the different JBL's?

I've been following this thread with interest.

I have not seen before such a good "Real Science" dedicated to bass cabinets. I mean good combination of theory and effort (and money) in balanced experiments genuinely seeking the best sound under certain restrictions (full range 15's).

Without prejudices, without trying to prove certain preconceived ideas are true.
Very good stuff.

And very usefull to me, I know 3015's with approximately same volume and tuning, so I can get a good idea of how Faitals and 140's and AL dust caps and closed ports will sound respect to my boxes.

Thanks!

Hate to be a pain, but you could you maybe post clips of those cabs with the ports blocked? Please? :D

i might be able to this coming week.
right now the second one is waiting for the herculiner to dry and the first one with the 15PR400's is already on the stage for its maiden gig tonight.
