Custom DIY 2x15 cab build

I'm gigging a pair of 3015's in single 15 cabs. Soon to be a JohnK inspired 2x15. Driving with either an MB500 or more usually a Music Man RD100. I seriously like those drivers ... A lot. I have no lack of mids and the lows are buttery smooth.

I've run them using P basses, Stingray fretless (very yummy) and StingRay fretted. Mostly strung with Chromes. It all has a nice thunk and bite.

John, have you ever built a cab with a slanted baffle? I'm echo'ing Kringle's question, wondering why we don't see more slanted baffles. Tilting my dual 115 cabs back just a bit increases the clarity when I'm standing. I get that we don't want to point the sound at the ceiling, I'm talking about a minor slant.

And Mal, I hope you share your 215 cab build with us, my carpenter friend has a commercial build-out ahead of my cab build.

Im going to be doing a 2x15 build with LDS using two 3015's full range and an atp80 super tweet hi passed at 3.5khz just in case I wanted a more sizzly sound. Im going to have it built as two seperate enclosures so that I can seal one or both compartments. The tuning is in between the eminence suggested medium and small vented boxes. I think that the vb was 65 liters and the fb was 55hz on winisd. That gives a pretty flat response down to 100hz, -0.5db @ 80hz and -3db @ 55hz (If memory serves me from last nights calculations) The cab would be 36" tall, 22" wide and 15.5" deep. Two 4" ports per chamber at roughly 6.9" long. Im really thinking about tilting the entire baffle back 10 degrees but, Im not sure. That would be a big improvement I think.

I may as well. I may actually try to build myself this time but, will probably use more ports.

If you include a flare on both ends of the port (not just the outer end) you can run higher port velocities with no ill effects. Best are the "aeroport" type vents that have a larger radius flare to smooth the air flow and minimize any chugging noise:

Less vent area = shorter ports = less wasted internal volume

I plan to use 2 4" port per driver to eliminate any chance of chuffing. The flared ports take up more room on the baffle and Im trying to get the width alittle smaller than some other peoples builds. The regular 4" ports will allow me to meet my cab width of 22". Im really just pondering the tilted baffle at this point. I wonder if moving just the top of the baffle in 3" would give me enough tilt towards my ears.

4 ports would be great but they will need to be much longer than using just 2. In the case of this thread, which calculates to a pair of 4.5" diameter tubes x 3.9" long, you would need 4 vents at 4" diameter x 9" long to maintain the same 46 hz tuning.

The extra ports and extra length subtracts about .2 Ft3 more internal volume than the original 2 vents---you need to add .2 Ft3 to you cabinet size.

And this is all based on the design of this thread. If you opt to build a smaller cabinet for your Faital woofers, the vents will be much longer. Good luck.

I just got done playing through an old trace elliot 2x15 and loved it! My LDS version should be done any day now and Im excited. That old trace was about the same efficiency as my berg nv610. It was just the right brightness, had great mids and tighter lows than I expected. Im expecting a 3015 loaded cab to be very similar but better. It didn't have quite the same tight low mid punch that the sealed berg had but, I could still get a great sound. It just killed with my sparkle overdrive and swell b-peg pedals. The berg could definitely handle more power but, these 3015's may even the odds on that.

This has been inspiring- I ran through the first 4 or 5 pages and that 215 looks just fine man. I'm using 2 TL-606s now loaded with 3015s, and just acquired an Eden WT405 head. I'm wanting something taller than the single 15, and light enough to make it up an icy rough-stone staircase in winter, here in the bleak northeast! I'll have to save some scratch and create some time (well, banks create money, so I guess I can do that!)... but this looks like a great working solution to my output/cartage issues!

Thanks for posting this, with all the great info on tech details and speaker specs. I'm now going to shamelessly clone/bastardize it!! It'll be awhile... but I'll post something, with kudos given, when I do...

Not sure if this entirely useful or relevant, but I recently swapped in a pair of 15PR400s into an older SWR Big Bertha. No tweeter required for my tastes.

I really like the results, but I guess I need to do some measuring to see if any adjustments will optimize it.

So, would I be correct in thinking that doing this as a 1x15 by halving the dimensions and using one port would yield similar results?

Theoretically speaking, yes.

My experience didn't quite prove it however... In my own layman terms, there is a "borrowed" space that a twin/multi driver cab has that you lose when simply halving the dimensions... Meaning, in the 2x15, for example, each driver can "push" sound waves into the other drivers "territory," as it were... I don't know if that makes any sense or not...

I tried halving both a 4x12 cab, and a 2x15 - both infinite baffle, or "sealed" as opposed to ported... Maybe the ported version would be different...
