Custom DIY 2x15 cab build

Asked this in the Dually thread, but this one seems to have more traffic - can you compare 3015 vs. Faital vs. a Mesa Diesel (original EV load)? I don't have JBL exposure, but I've been living with Mesas for years.

i'm sorry, but i can't give you any comparisons. i don't have any EV speakers right now, and i've never owned or played thru a mesa diesel cab.

Been a while since I've played the Mesa/EV's. Just in general, both of these will have a fuller bottom and a smoother, less "aggresive" tone in the mids. The EV will sound a good deal brighter than the Kappalite, not sure how to compare it to the Faital.

Can't really be more specific without them here. The EV's are easier to push non-linear and get that aggresive cone breakup tone. Either of these will stay smoother, cleaner, louder. The EV's do play loud with a given power, but get dirty quicker than these by a pretty healthy amount.

Coming back to the origin of the thread:

Eminence generally recommends to run the speakers through high pass filters to protect the speaker from to large cone excursion below its resonance. How do You deal with this?

I also would like to know which volume You chose for the box - a rough estimate from the data You gave leads to about 80 l per speaker, doesn't it?

I have built a (pretty successful) prototype for a compact 1x15 cabinet around the 3015 with a volume of 73 l which i want to improve further.

as far as an HPF, both of the heads that i use with it (a streamliner 900 and an SVT7 pro) have a built-in steep rolloff at 30Hz so that takes care of protecting the speakers.

as far as the size of the cab, i looked at Eminence's recommendations for different sized cabs and tuning, then i combined that with what size i wanted to make the cab (so it would fit in my car!) and then used winisd to calculate the port sizes.

The eminence HPF suggestions are there for extra protection/safety but I've never used one, never needed it, and never blew anything up because of it. Most all in one bass amps do have some built in, but even stuff that doesn't, like SWR's or rack rigs, I've still never had a problem. You just watch what you're doing and don't blow up your own stuff.:D

the 3015's are nice, but the JBL's have more transparency and detail, especially in the mids and high end.

i think that the JBL's feel a little more efficient than the 3015's, especially in the mids and top end, but the 3015's seem to have more low end so it's a toss up.

here's four clips (the previous two and a new two with the dual K140's). i didn't touch the amp or bass settings from the previous two 3015 clips:

now after listening to them, the 3015's actually have a little MORE top end but, IMO, they're a bit clankier about it, whereas the JBL's are smoother, but they do have less low end........ so it turns out that i'm really digging the 3015's really just as much as my beloved old JBL's. too bad that neo's are so expensive these days, since the 3015's cost as much or more now as a used K140.

Here are some of Johns comments and sound-clips.

Sorta like the warnings on plastic baggies?

I still put them over my head, and I'm still kickin too.

If the excursion at say 30 Hz is less than the excursion at the resonance hump, I assume you're OK. It doesn't even have to be that good considering the mix of harmonics that the bass actually puts out. The the drivers in this thread it's not that much of an issue in practice as far as I can tell.

+1

A typical electric bass guitar puts out roughly twice the energy at it's first harmonic than it does at it's fundamental......upright bass...that's another story....string scale length, etc. makes big fundamentals many folks like to tame down and let more harmonics come through. Fdeck's adjustable HPF looks like a great tool for that.

Hi John, I’m hoping you can answer a question I have about many of the high power (500+ watt) bass amps which is directly related to your Starliner.

When you ran the 300w SVT with the Starliner was it enough power to push the cab to max (fart and back off) or can you push the Starliner harder with the GB 900 watts? What I’m wondering is - could some of the high power bass guitar amps be way overkill for most bass guitar cabinets? Your thoughts?

my SVT drives it great and you might be able to get it to fart if you cranked the volume and bass controls to the max, but it's more likely that the head is running out of power and it's power amp is distorting more than the cab is. to me your question is kind of a non-issue, since it handles a GB SL900 and SVT7pro at even louder volumes than with the SVT without farting out.
