Custom DIY 2x15 cab build

i ran the pink noise test again on the two cabs today, only this time it was outdoors with the cabs laying on their backs.

the first test was with the mic close to the center of the top cone (just like the indoor test), and it's freq response was pretty close to the indoor test.
the second test was moving the mic back 1 meter, and pointed to the center of the cab ( i.e. in between the two 15's). it's pretty remarkable to me that all three tests (indoor, outdoor, close and far mic'd) are all relatively pretty close to the same.

here's the results:

That's cool. You can still see the Faital have a slightly bigger midbass and a more shallow dropoff in the topend, more prevalent at the 1 meter setting. They still don't look quite as different as they sound to me. Interesting stuff.

John, I would have expected to see a "hole" in the close-mic'd curves, corresponding to the port tuning frequency. (In fact, that's how I check the port tuning on my DIY cabs). I must be missing something conceptual, because it really looks like you did everything exactly right.

Thanks for performing the additional RTA tests John, the results are very interesting. The data looks like it is a little smother at 1 meter.

When you listen to the dramatic differences in the programmed material sound files and compare it to these graphs, it really drives home the notion of how important listening tests are. The graphs tell you what to expect but listening can be really revealing.

+1. i agree 100%.

either that, or i just got lucky. ;)

How do you guys think the Faital would do in a double baffle B-15 cab? I'm really digging the extra top end, but the low end looks like it could be on the oppressive side for a sealed 810 fan. You guys think the smaller box could mellow out that low end? Every once in a while I threaten to upgrade from the Delta 15a's and I never do, but that extra top end is more to my liking than the 4k in the Deltas, plus it's 7 lbs. less per cab, so this could make me break down. Plus I'd think there'd be less chance of me bashing the transformers into the speaker when I flip it. I hope, anyway.

The lowend should have a little smoother rolloff than the Delta's....just a bit less "boom", with a brighter top.

+1.

Jimmy, IMO, the Faital is so much more overall smooth & balanced, while having wider freq range, not mention more sensitive (efficient), to me, other than the cost, replacing a delta15A with one is a no brainer. its having more mids and highs doesn't make you notice that it also has more low end, and IME, it's anything but a boomy sounding driver.

You guys would say that! Well if my tax return ever comes (had to file by mail due to complications), I may bust one of those Faitals out and see how it works out. Almost feels wrong to throw a neo in a B-15, but I guess I wouldn't have to tell anyone. I really like the sound of that speaker. I like it better than the 3015 by a pretty big margin.

I think johnk's personal taste might like a little brighter sound than I do on bass and that's cool. He is right about the Faital being "balanced", no boomy lows or peaky top that I can hear. Based on his clips obviously, I don't have one sitting here. My taste might lean towards the 3015 a bit, but it's just personal taste. The Faital is a very nice full range driver.

actually, i don't use much high end when i play with my band, but i do like to know that it's available if i need it without having to boost it on the amp, and being that these are one-way cabs (w/no mid or tweets), neither one of them is really all that bright sounding. lately, i've been playing thru the 3015's just to get used to it a bit more, since that's the one that i'm going to use on my next gig.

and BTW, i used the Faital cab on my last gig and it really wasn't bright at all when playing with the full band as heard in this short clip below:

Cool. I was kinda guessing based on clips. I end up using more of the clankier/harsher as some would call them, uppermids on some gigs because it makes it sit right with the particular band in a particular place. I listen to that same tone by itself though and I don't like it.

Man, it sits just beautifully in that clip. No offense, but it's probably the most telling clip I've heard on your cabs....a real song, with a real band.....great playing and no slap solo's.....like it a lot. Your other clips are quite helpful as well because they are real basslines, but it really helps hearing it with a band and just a mic out in the room catching it all.
